weird audio/pairing with MacOS

the automatic mic switching when I connect my airpod pros is intermittently working, came home and they sounded like AM radios again through apple music. have to go into audio settings and move it back to the internal mic.

is there any long term fix/resolve?

on an early 2015 MBP running Big Sur
