Hi

I just checked istat pro and coconut battery and both show 14 cycles on my brand new rev B MBA. I have charged it twice only since I got it yesterday!
Any idea how that can be?
It was brand spanking new in the box from Amazon and I am happy to have screen 9C8F. Could me reinstalling the system have anything to do with it?
Or the fact that the battery was completely dead when I started it?

Not really concerned, just curious.

Thanks

This is normal. I once had a brand new MBP with 30 cycles on the battery already! Might have something to do with the amount of testing it has done it before it leaves the factory and is sealed. Just a thought.

Mines with that same screen model came with 1 cycle and now it has 2 :D with like 98% health since I haven't calibrated it yet :)

I do not use the battery much!

cycles

Mine came with 8 cycles and only 95% battery health.
After two calibrations I am at 90% health and it takes forever to charge.
Might have to take it in...sigh...

Mine had three cycles and started with 95 %. After one calibration it is at 92 %. Seems strange too me.

Any new MBA or indeed other MB/MBP should come with a battery with ZERO cycles. Anything else is not normal and a little bit dodgy. Most likely a refurb or return sold as 'new'.

Percentage charge (unless wildly depleted) is fairly irrelevant as it is governed by software calibration.

No it isn't normal and your suggestion/excuse of 'testing' is not valid I'm afraid.

Mine, out of the box after 1 complete charge, showed 6 cycles.

Brand new, sealed in box, manufacture date and warranty all show March 09.

My first MBA (rev A) showed 2 cycles out of the box.

I do not think this was any kind of refurb return... It is only weeks old.

But I could be wrong.

Well don't be afraid, just provide some evidence for what your saying. That seems logical doesn't it?

But having cycles is definitely normal, I've had 5 MBP (1 classic, 4 unibody) and each one (except one) had cycles out of the box. So it would seem to me you really don't know what "normal" is.

Seems logical? Perhaps but exactly what evidence would you like? The word of a friend of mine who is ex-Apple/Hardware? Or my 10+ years of Mac laptop use with *touch wood* no similar battery issues and zero cycles out of the box every time. It's just my opinion based on my own experience - negligible as a source sample of course but there you go.

Not sure why you've 'had' 4 UMBPs but seems there's lots of little niggly issues with those. Are you reading off the System Profiler/Power or some iStat or other widget? If they've all had cycles, my next question would be are they from the same source?

My brand new MB came from the Apple Store came with 1 battery cycle. Refurbished MBA ordered and shipped directly from Apple came with 3 battery cycles.

I was asking for evidence supporting why having cycles out of the box "isn't normal and [my] suggestion/excuse of 'testing' is not valid".

I always read off of System Profiler whenever I get a new system. Of course the source of the computers doesn't matter, but they came from Apple, two different stores, I exchanged 3 computers for build issues, flickering, superdrive malfunctions, and dead pixels.

I figured you were just basing your opinion on battery cycles on personal experience, which is understandable, but you really should have just said "In my 10+ years of purchasing Apple laptops I haven't encountered any battery cycles" and left it at that.
