Weird Harddrive Sounds -- Vibration too

For the last 20 minutes, I have been trying to figure out why my macbook's hard drive is making vibrating sounds.

Sometimes it is pretty loud, especially on bootup.
But wait, just now my computer's fan stopped going, the whole computer had recovered from "booting procedures" and now it's silent.

I have noticed if I press down pretty hard to the left and right of the touchpad, the sound, if its' not too loud, can be stopped?

Is it just the surface? Or is my HD bad? (it was one I got off of newegg. a WD 120 Gig)
 
I suggest making a backup quickly if you haven't done so.
weird noises from the HD is usually a bad sign.
maybe you didn't put the hard drive in properly the first time?
if the noises are still there after you checked the installation of the hd I'd call apple care.
 
I've had this harddrive in there for about 2 months. This is the first time I've heard this sound.

I think it's just vibrating or something....
I'll try to get some audio of the sound to post tonight.
 
if you have a external case for a 2,5 HD then you could try if the noise is still there when used in the case...if yes you'll know that the hd is probably defective.
 
I thought about it some more this morning and I remember when I installed the HD, it seemed a "tad" bigger than it should have been. After I do a backup tonight, I'll check and see.
And what's with it going completely silent after about a minute?
Oh man.

EDIT:
Now that I'm in linux (may make no difference): when I take my macbook and move it towards my chest with the screen open, I can hear a click click of a fan. It stops when the laptop is level again.

Am I screwed?
 
I really don't know about the clicking sounds...but as for the size of the HDs...I think for the Macbooks you are supposed to only use HDs that are 9,5 mm high or less.
 
Just started the machine up and alll I heard was a 3 second noise @ the beginning and that was it. :p

So confusing and worrisome. ;)
 
Good news. Took out the cd in my cd drive and all sounds went away magically.

I've had trouble with some cds making alot of sound. That would also explain why linux sounded worse than OS X. In gentoo it keeps probing my damn drive over and over making it spin ALL the time.
