So basically I'm encoding my DVD rips with HB on the AppleTV setting (MP4, H264) and the resulting movie can not be played by quicktime UNTIL I tag it with MetaX, and then the resulting movie is playable. I think it may be that I am doing AC3 passthrough with the audio but I am not sure. Anyone have a similar problem? And why would MetaX fix this?

If you're on a Mac, try installing the Perian add-on for quicktime, google it to find it. It is free and allows quicktime to play almost any video format. See if that solves the problem.

Thank you for responding. I have had Perian installed for awhile and that's not the problem. The error it gives when I try to first run it is something like 'sample description is incomplete'. When I run it in VLC, it gives an error about the AC3 passthrough not being supported, but it still plays.

EDIT: im 'faster' ....my password for the that account is on another computer :)
