This is kind of an odd situation ... but I've got an iPad Mini 2 (circa 2016) that we bought along with many others under our Apple business account. This one was activated with a managed iCloud account, back when we first started looking at different MDM solutions.

It seems to have sat around a long time in one of our offices, before it eventually was discovered and shipped to the one I work in, as a solution to use as a dedicated controller for "Zoom Rooms" videoconferencing software.

Problem is, when I went to set it up, I realized it was under the activation lock with that managed ID and the passwords I had on file for it in an old spreadsheet didn't work to unlock it. In the process of trying to sort it out, my boss clicked an option in our current MDM solution (JAMF Pro) to try to release it. It gave some instructions to "leave the iCloud ID field blank" but to "key in the code provided by JAMF Pro in its password field" in order to unlock it. But I believe in the middle of us messing with all of this while I was on the phone with my boss, I initiated a wipe/restore of the iPad before I obtained that code from him. The code didn't work for me to unlock it, and I think we basically "bricked" it?

Since then, we tried completely removing the device from our Apple Business Manager and from JAMF Pro, and I tried to take it to the Apple Store along with proof of purchase to see if they could unlock it for us. Turns out, they say they can't because their systems already show it as unlocked. (I guess that's what happens when you use a "managed" iCloud account as your ID? The Enterprise has local control of it instead of Apple?)

I tried wiping the device, even in DFU mode, and bringing it back up from iTunes but it still goes to that same activation lock prompt -- apparently without even trying to communicate with Apple's activation servers. (I was on the phone with a senior tech at Apple who claimed the device hadn't even been trying to check in with them on their end.)

What now? Just forced to trash it?
