My C2D MBP has been running great for the past two months since I bought it, but starting Monday, its been acting up. I'm wondering if anyone thinks these two things are related.

Monday, when I attempted to turn it on, it stayed on the black screen for roughly 45 seconds before showing the gray. Then, it took another 45 seconds to give the little status circle (don't know a better term for it then this). It spun and spun, while I heard the hard drive spinning. This kept on for a while before I finally removed the battery to reset it (power button did not respond). The second time, the black screen went away after 10 seconds, but it still took quite a while to get the OS X boot screen. Half my icons from my dock were gone, and the computer ran extremely slow, even though Activity Monitor said I was using less than a quarter of my ram, and my CPU usage was around 4%.

I used it for a short time before attempting to put it to sleep using the actual sleep command. It normally takes about 5 seconds to sleep, but took 3 minutes before the screen turned itself off.

This behavior continued through this morning. Now, my battery icon is showing an X. Unplugging it and plugging it back in resets this.

Any thoughts? Is Applecare my best option right now?

What recent changes have you made to your system? Is it still slow if you boot into Safe Mode (hold SHIFT at startup)? AppleCare seems like a pretty good option right now. :)
