Why do I keep getting strange messages on my UK iphone 3G. They appear when the phone is idle and I have to press the dismiss button to be able to unlock my phone. Apple say they have never seen this before although I am not convinced. Some of the messages have said they have detected illegal software and my phone will be blocked unless they are removed!!! I have only got genuine itunes apps on my phone and it has not been jaibroken.

thats weird.....call apple?

I have done and they say they don't know what it is. I can't really believe that as it looks like part of the firmware programming. They say it could be caused by one of my apps, but I would have expected other people who have purchased them to be getting the same messages. They have treated this as a high priority and have asked me to restore the phone and try it for a few days with no apps loaded to see if I get any more messages.
One message read:-

TILT 3D VIRTUAL
MAPPING/TILT 3D VOICE
CONTROL MENU-ACTIVATED.

Another message suugested there was a GPS test to be done at a certain time and the phone needed to be outside.
Another message said the phone had been reported stolen and the police had been given my GPS position.
Another one said that this unit had been selected for future security testing for 2010!!!!

Can you get to an Apple store? If they don't replace that for you I'd pitch a fit.

I haven't got a problem getting it replaced. The question is where are these messages coming from and will it happen in future on the replacement.
It isn't unique to my phone as a friend of mine has had 4 messages as well.

So what happened when you restored the firmware?

Interestingly, I didn't see any evidence via google that anyone else has posted about these error codes... anywhere.

I only resored it last night and, up to now, haven't had any more. They don't appear everyday and I have had none for 3 or 4 days before. Up to now I have no apps installed (at the request of Apple) to see what happens.
Apple did say they haven't seen this before. I could understand it if th.e phone was jailbroken and installed with non Apple approved apps.
Is there something going on deep within the firmware that no one but Apple knows about?

I don't know about the errors you're seeing, but of course there is. It's a closed source OS. Of course there are things there that you don't know about. Even the person you called at Apple for that matter -- remember, they were just some CSR or maybe at best a CSR's manager. You weren't talking to iPhone OS developers. The person at Apple knows at best about as much as you do and likely less than most of the people here. :p

I _THINK_ somebody is screwing with you. Here in Austria some SMS-Web-Gateways have the ability to not only send normal SMS messages, but also so-called SMS-Flash messages. Those appear on the phone IMMEDIATELY (and in the same format you described) and on most phones don't get stored in the SMS Database.

I'd post a proof-screenshot, but my iPhone is currently restoring - will do this as soon as I have some time later today.
