Weird Mouse Problem 12.3.1

Hi.

I am having a weird problem with mouse behavior that eventually ends in Mac becoming unusable. It mostly starts with attempting to drag and drop a file/folder in the Finder. The file remains "attached" to the cursor but wont release on mouse click. Only way to release is cmd.period. Any action in the finder after that will simply "pick up" the item clicked on and drag it around with the cursor. Sometimes entire blocks are "picked up" - like doing shift click in a list.

At this point the dock wont work anymore nor will any menus if the Finder is 'active'. Re-launching the Finder has no effect. Deleting com.apple.finder.prefs no effect (other than resetting prefs). If the initial action was to drag something into an app then that app is likewise unusable now.

Restart resets everything but as soon as a finder item is clicked....same again.

Here are two videos trying to demonstrate the problem. couldn't figure out the mouse button click animation so used sound (which is double - mousedown click, mouseup click.

Eventually I cannot use the mac much at all because only keyboard works to switch to another app (and F3), cannot open finder window, no dock clicks work nor will the menu is the app was made inactive by this. Only cmd-tab is available and when on an app not involved, menu works fine (dock does not).

Complete show stopper as even when I am able to use another app the cursor has either a mini screen icon or some finder folder/element attached constantly.

Bit hard to explain but maybe the videos help. Tried 3 mice - apple wired mighty, magicmouse1, logitech MX520. Deleted

Problem only started post 12.3.1 update.

Can anyone help? tia

Have you checked that there are no other mice (or keyboards or other inputs devices) connected via bluetooth? Try turning off bluetooth and connect a USB mouse if possible. Also see whether the problem persists if you boot in safe mode.

Thanks idmean, that is precisely the zone where the problem was. I saw a post on Reddit where someone was having the exact same problem and he fixed it by removing the logitech dongle from the usb. I did that and bam! Problem gone. I had kept it in there because I have an old Mac Pro and recently upgraded the bluetooth/wifi module and had the logitech mouse as a backup when bluetooth wasn't active. Seems the logitech M510 mouse dongle has a problem with Monterey 12.3.1

Hey hey, luckily I’ve found this thread. We’re not alone, buddy; we’re definitely not alone. Many people is having issues with Bluetooth on Monterey; just use the search and you’ll see. People complaining since early builds, like macOS 12.0.1, or 12.1

As for myself, this has been my experience: I’ve been on Big Sur until today, literally, today I gathered enough courage to, not just update, but make a whole clean install of macOS 12.3.1, at this point I really expected it to work flawlessly. I mean, we’re at less than a month until WWDC reveals the new macOS, which could perfectly be macOS 12.5 in order to keep fixing bugs and enhancing the performance, polishing the experience.

But nope, macOS 12.3.1 is still having issues with Bluetooth. From what I’ve just read, apparently Apple rebuilt the Bluetooth protocol for Monterey. And I suspect that both that and Universal Control are related with the issues.

In my case, I’m using the only Mac mini which does support Monterey but was left without Universal Control on purpose (again, shame on Apple). Well, despite not supporting Universal Control, the process keeps appearing on top on Activity Monitor, like it was trying to work.

I have an iPad Pro and an iPhone, which could be causing interferences, as well as an old Apple Magic Keyboard (the one that works with batteries) along with a modern Magic Mouse 2.

My problems started late this night, after watching a couple of Adventure Time episodes on QuickTime. I tried to move the media control with the pointer (using the trackpad), and it started stuttering. Then, suddenly, after clicking on the menu bar, it started to move itself like if a ghost was pressing the direction keys on the keyboard. Maybe I’m having an episode of Poltergeist but, honestly, I’d bet it is Monterey not handling Bluetooth correctly.

So, what am I gonna do? While I eventually plan to replace my Magic Keyboard with the newer Touch-ID powered Magic Keyboard 3, it’s not my intention to do it yet (I’ll wait for some sale).

What I am going to do is wait until macOS 12.4 is released next week, perform a clean install, and then, if I’m still having ghost pulsations on the keyboard and stuttering with the Magic Trackpad 2, I will return to macOS 11.6.5 Big Sur. Maybe we’ll have 11.6.6 by then. And stay there until the problem is fixed.

TL;DR: I al having problems with my newly installed macOS 12.3.1 and apparently more people is having issues with Bluetooth in Monterey. I’ll wait until macOS 12.4 next week and if the problem isn’t solved by then, I will go back to Big Sur.
