I'm having this odd problem with my Macbook... sorry it's a bit of a convoluted explaination:
A few weeks ago I took it in to a local Apple authorised service provider to get a new screen (had some dead pixels in the old one) and a new top case added (it was greying on the palm rest area).
When I got it back, all was fine except straight away I was getting intermittant problems with the battery not being recognised, and not taking any charge which had never happened before. There would often (although not always) be a black cross over the battery icon in the menu bar.
Tried all the software updates, resetting the SMC, battery updater, calibrating etc etc but in the end called Apple who eventually agreed (after saying that the fact that it was an INTERMITTANT problem was very unusual) to send me a new battery.
Got the new battery, and although the black cross isn't appearing any more (although I have seen it once since putting in the new battery), I'm now getting a problem where even if the battery is fully charged, it won't start up unless the power cable is plugged in.
The weird thing is that I can plug in the cable, start the machine, and then UNPLUG the cable again straight away, and it carries on fine. When it first starts up, the battery icon will read almost empty for about 5 minutes (saying "calculating..." if you click on it), and will then show a full battery, and continue running as normal for a couple of hours or so.
So I'm stuck with a machine that I can't always start up without the power lead. I'm now thinking that the guys in the service centre must have just messed something up when they had it.
I think I will call the service centre later today but wanted to see if anyone on here had seen anything like this before? My trouble is that my Macbook is now just out of warranty so I'm clearly going to have an argument on my hands if I go back to the service centre and start accusing them of breaking my machine.
