Hi everyone,

I'm having a problem with my iPhone, it's acting very strange.

1. The external speaker makes no sound. I do not get any sound when I unlock the phone (the little click), no sound when I input text in a text message, no sound when I play a song in ipod mode. The only time I get sound from the external speaker is when someone calls me - the ringtone works fine.

I get the "Accessory is not made to work with iPhone...Do you want to turn on airplane mode?" message every 10 seconds. It's ridiculous. Whenever I unlock it, I get that message. After undocking it, I get the message. Nothing is plugged into the iPhone, not even the dock or the headphones and it will pop up this message.

I have tried doing a restore, tried hard reseting, checked all the relevant settings and I cannot figure out how to fix this problem. Hopefully someone can help me out here, it's very frustrating.

Thanks

The first things is a series of setting under Settings>Sounds.

The rest of it sounds like a hardware issues and you should get it replaced.

I just bought it off of craigslist and its a 4gb 1st gen.. so its not in warranty anymore... what should i do??

might be under warranty... when did they buy it?? u should be able to go in there, if its not far from ya, and theyd b able to tell u if it is

i checked the website using the serial #..its not anymore

I can hear everything through the headphones.. and theres also sound out of the speaker if i adjust the volume in setting..change the ring tone etc..so its not a hardware problem i dont think...

hmmmmmm

and uve tried restore...

what happens when u play music through the ipod?? still the same?

Yeah i tried restoring, then pwned it again..

I can hear music if I use the headphones, but if i play without the headphones then I cant hear anything. The song appears to be playing.

But the speaker works because when I adjust volume, change ringtones, the sound comes out of the speaker.

I think you can pay the repair fee and they just replace it. I think it cost $199 for the 4GB. It's on apples website somewhere.

My old 4 gig use to act similar after I plugged in the headphones. Sometimes it would still 'think' that the headphones were plugged in when in fact they were not. The only think that helped was sliding the headphone jack in and out a few times and the speaker would start working again. Sounds like a hardware issue on some of these first models.

did the problem eventually go away for you?

I went to class.came back..turned my iphone on and it started playing out of the speaker.. everything was fine.. i did a test to see of its fixed my restarting the phone but then the sound stopped coming again.

So i figured that the problem is the iphone constantly thinking that it is connecting to an accessory..one that is not compatible with it. Everything seems to function fine when its on a dock, or a headphone. So now just gotta figure out how to fix it..

I really doubt this, but is there water damage in the dock connector on the iPhone? My iPhone 3G got wet at the bottom dock (while applying bodyguardz, stupid of me to get water in there..) and kept giving the warning above when I used the phone. Solved it by letting my iPhone sit at the vents on my MBP and worked, although part of the indicator is red now.

What about dust? You can try using compressed air to blow the dust off. Although as what other people said, might be a hardware problem.

sigh.. thanks for all your helps guys.. but I think i'm giving up..

I'm gonna turn this thread into: How can i get my money back thread..

So I bought this on ebay and the listing did not mention whatsoever of this issue.. It only said that this is a used iphone in good condition.. So I got it for a day and I was busy studying for my final so i couldnt play with it.. a day later I turned it on and this happened.. I contacted the seller and he first gave me the " i dont know what you are talking about and it must be your fault" spill.. Then I filed a dispute on Paypal and Ebay based on the fact that the condition of the phone is not the same as it was mentioned which render it useless.. I contacted him again and he asked me to ship him the phone then he'll give me back the refund if the phone is in the same condition as when he shipped it out.. I didn't agree to that because I dont feel safe (he pretty much scammed me once already).. and I asked him to pay me through paypal first then I will will ship the phone to him .. still waiting for his reply..

what do you guys think I should do? if it comes to having paypal/ebay handling this, do you think I will win?

edit: This is his replied to my paypal request;

"Hi three!

come on guy why it is very hard to due with you. Please send the phone back. I will refund. come on guy. I am a bussiness man not just sell one item and run away. Let me know your decision.

Thanks,

Thanks,"

which I replied

"It doesn't have to be that hard to deal with me. If you remembered correctly, I paid for the phone as soon as I won it, and everything was legit and confirmed. I wanted an iphone so i bought one, but regretfully it doesnt work. I will send you the phone back if you pay me through paypal, then as soon as I see the payment transaction, I will ship the phone out. Please also include the shipping cost. If you dont agree to this, I will have to file a claim with paypal /ebay. All I really want is my money back and you will get your phone back. I am not a businessman like you, I'm just a normal student trying to buy a phone. I don't scam and cheat, so please don't speak to me like one. Let me know what you decide. "
