so i hooked up my 17 inch imac using the following:

mini dvi to dvi adapter. . to a dvi to hdmi directly to the TV .. the TV recognized my computer but it is just a pic of a wallpaper (not even my wallpaper the original that comes with the mac the purple and blue one) .. has anyone had this problem . . none of my icons show up and non of my actions translate to the TV?

Your icons shouldn't be on the TV. Does your mouse go over to the TV? Check the Displays settings in System Preferences. If you have dual monitors hooked up there should be an arrangement tab like in the picture below. And the "blue and purple one" means the Aurora wallpaper, right?
