Weird problem with airplay please help

Hello i am havign a very strange problem with airplay and my apple tv 2 my mac is running 10.6.7. and my phone is running iOS 4.3.2 and the apple tv says it's software is up to date.

I can play video via airplay no problem from itunes on the mac and can stream from youtube from my iPhone no problem. However if i try and play music from the iPhone via the iPod app the airplay symbol will go blue to show it's connected but then for some reason the phone will register the song as playing but no sound will come out of apple tv, similarly when i try and play music from the mac it flat out refuses to talk to the apply tv. However if i go through the apple tv menu to computers and select the song from my mac it plays with no problem??

I am very confused by this and would appreciate your advice on how to solve the problem thank you

I don't know specifically how to fix your problem, however, everytime I have airtunes problems if I reboot (ie Full power off and back on) the iOS device things seems to work fine afterwards. Airtunes seems buggy because I have to do this frequently.

I think iPod song play might be going to optical output port on apple tv. Do you have both optical output and hdmi port connected?

I just tried Airplay from within iTunes and on my ATV2 the HDMI and optical outputs are simultaneously active (i.e. you get the audio output over both at the same time). In fact, I don't see any option on the ATV2 to switch between the two ports, thus both must remain on at all times. This is for stereo playback from both audio files and video from my Mac running iTunes v10.2.1. I don't know how the multi-channel outputs are handled but I suspect that they would be the same.

As others have said, whenever I have an issue with Airplay (which does happen occasionally but not often) I do a reset of the iPhone or iPad and it normally fixes it. You might try unplugging the Apple Tv if you still have issues
