Weird screen when MBP wakes up?

Last night I opened my brand new MBP. I transferred things from my old PB, etc. Then I decided to calibrate the battery, so I left it on overnight to run the battery down, and I left it alone all day today.

When I got home tonight the battery was obviously dead. I plugged in the power cord and hit the power button and I saw a weird screen with random swirly colors - it kind of looked like somehting from the visualizer in itunes. Then a br made up of parallel vertical bars (sorry I don't know how to describe this) appeared on the bottom of the screen and got darker I think? from left to right, like something was loading. Then I get the weird swirly screen again, then my desktop picture and everything was normal.

So is this just something in the new system that it does when it wakes up? Or should I be concerned?

That doesn't sound normal. There are a few things that could be causing this and they range in seriousness from a corrupt GPU driver to a failing logic board. Maybe boot your MacBook Pro from the OSX discs and hold D to get the Hardware Test. Run these to see if anything is picked up. Has your machine been acting normally otherwise?

Could it just be your MBP waking up for a safe sleep? When it safe sleeps it basically saves its memory state to the hard drive and loads it back when it wakes up, but it does display your system's screen in gray with a progress indicator at the bottom as it does that, pretty much sounds like what you described.

I was wondering about this too. I did notice that the screen saver is set to a very similar pattern to what I saw (swirly design).....so maybe it was just waking from that. I haven't noticed the bar before (on my old powerbook) but maybe it's just something with the new system? For now I'm just going to assume it was just a weird wake up unless it happens again.

Yeah, I think this is what it is. While I don't remember th swirly lines, mine did the same thing with the white progress bars with a hazy white background when I ran the battery down for calibration.

By the way, do you find that it takes a lot longer for the MBP to fall "asleep" (with a pulsing light) than your PB?

I haven't noticed this, but I have noticed that when I put the MBP to sleep and leave it (say for 18 hrs) it drains that battery much more than it used to on my PowerBook. Like 12% just from sleeping for less than a day? Maybe I'll do a test with both and compare to get better numbers.
