Weird slide-in app launch animation

Ever since 15.6.1 I’ve been experiencing odd app launch animations. When I tap on an app from the Home Screen instead of ‘expanding’ from its location and filling the screen it slides in from the right. If I reboot the animation will change back to the expanding transition for a day or two before it reverts to the slide-in from the right. Any idea what’s up with this odd behavior?
 
Does this happen with every app or only specific ones? If a specific app, could you give an example?
