I just got my ibook yesterday, fully charged the battery and am typing on it right now. The problem is after waking it from sleep, there is this little buzz or whirring sound coming from the right. It sounds like there's cd-rom inside my combo drive or my hard drive spinning. I shut-down the computer, restart it, and the same noise occur during start-up. And its pretty loud. Since this is my first mac, I don't know if this is normal or not. Should I be concern and take it back to the apple store and have them check it?

it sounds kinda wierd to me.I think if u live anywhere near the Apple Store, you can bring it back and ask them to have a check to see if there's anything wrong. But if u live far from the Apple Store, i think u could call the Apple Service Centre for support.

I've got a 12" iBook, 3 months old. I hear the exact same thing and I assumed it was normal. I know that it makes that sound every time it wakes up from sleep.

in the iBook the HD is in the front left corner, battery is front right, CD is back-right.

It is the sound of the slot-load CD/DVD drive. I'm not sure if it's checking for a disk, or by default trying to eject or pull in any disk that might be in the drive.

After fooling with my iBook, it seems to be the sound of the eject mechanism. If you slide a CD in while the book is sleeping, it will eject as soon as you wake it up.

Not sure if it's a feature or what the deal is.

No offence to Dark Networks or lilstewart92, but do either of you own 'newish' iBooks? I'm not impressed with the jumping to conclusions of 'take it back to the store' or 'could be a bad HD'. Good way to scare the heck out of a new mac user. Looking forward to hearing from other iBook owners to see if they notice similar operational sounds.
