this has been happening for a few weeks now:

2008 Mac Pro, El Capitan (using a new SSD hard drive as start drive) -

every morning I start up - and then the whole system freezes and crashes about 60% of the way through the start up process.

So, I forcibly power down (holding the power button in the front of the Mac Pro), then, once it's turned off, I pull out the power plug.

then I start again, this time using safe startup mode.

then I start for a third time, using normal startup mode.

and usually everything works at this point.

Most recent mornings, I try to remember to begin with safe mode, then power off, then start again with normal mode.

does anybody have any idea what's happening or how I can prevent it from happening?

thanks very much for any feedback,

W

If the problem started after installing the SSD, then that's cause.

Try booting from an external hard drive.

Remove & reseat the SSD then erase it & do a clean install. Don't install any other programs.

If the problem persists only on this SSD, the SSD is the problem.

oh gosh! that would do it, but that is a rather draconian measure. I would hope that there's something a little less severe!

the problem started well over a month or six weeks after using the new SSD drive, which makes me think (or at least hope) it's not anything to do with the physical drive. I hope!

thanks again for your feedback,
