Weird to anybody else how infrequently people update?

I mean I know we're kind of freaks here. But I probably have 40-50 people with iPhones on my contact list, and while bored at work I just went through and a grand total of 3 have upgraded to iOS5 (you can tell because they don't have iMessage yet). 1 is a programmer and another one I told about iOS5 and did it for her last night.

I guess it's possible that more than a couple are upgrading their phone and don't feel like the hassle until they get their new iPhone anyway.

Related side note: is there anyway to get a list in your contacts that is just people with iMessage? Seems like it would be a useful feature.

I came across a girl on the subway with a iphone 3g... after talking to her for a few minutes, discovered that she had NEVER updated beyond what came on the phone out of box.

I don't know, some people don't get it hahaha

iOS5 has been out for about 24 hours, and you're calling out people who haven't upgraded yet, saying it's "weird...how infrequently people update"?

Are we supposed to just drop everything the instant it comes out and upgrade, is that considered "normal frequency"? What would constitute an "early adopter" in this case?

Perhaps weird was the wrong word. Maybe surprising is a better fit. That of my contacts, who are mostly 20 something relatively tech savvy computer generation people only around 2% have updated.

I don't consider updating to the most current version of software 'early adopter' unless you do the unreleased beta versions.

I'm not criticizing people for not upgrading, just saying I found it a little strange that more people didn't say "oh, new update, cool, I'll do it overnight." Then plug their phone into their computer and update.

Remember one of the reasons for wireless syncing was the surprisng number of percentages who rarely connect their device.

A friend had his 3GS crash. He went to the Apple Store to get it fixed and the guy found it had never been synced since the day he bought it. My wife only syncs hers when she's updating her music. She always skips the iTunes/iOS updates unless I do it for her.

People on this board are the most diehard users out there. The beauty of Apple for a lot of people is that it works without having to tweak it a lot. This is especially true for users like my wife who's' grown numb to Windows's neverending 'Important updates'.

That's me. I got home late last night, watched the end of the baseball game, and went to bed. A bit unusual, even for me, that I didn't sit down at my computer last night, but I do have a life.

Besides, it's not like the update is going anywhere. It'll be there when I get to it.

Yeah, I mean I guess I sort of understood that on some level, it was just really weird seeing it visually confirmed by the extremely low percentage of people with iMessage. Though perhaps it's also that some users may be having a hard time syncing up their phone numbers to their iMessage, as another thread seems to be implying.

I did it manually. That is, I went to create a text and then saw whether or not the box had iMessage or not.

Yes, I was really bored. I was told to be ready for a 10AM meeting that is continually delayed. Since I work out of a different office I can't even do anything but sit here and wait, since the 'extremely important meeting' can happen at anytime. Luckily it provides me with lots of time to play with iOS5 and obsess about shipping times for my iPhone.

Most normal people are lucky they even know how to make a phone call with the iPhone much less update it.

I only plug my phone into my computer at home on weekends. I take some time to go download updates to all my apps (I really wish I could set those to auto-download) and change up my music playlists and stuff like that, and sync it all up.

And yes, I'm a 20-something, relatively-tech-savvy guy. I simply have a routine that I like, and I'm going to follow it.

...it doesn't hurt that with what iOS4 did to the 3G, I had some apprehension about what iOS5 will do with my 3GS, but most of those fears have been allayed at this point.

Thanks for clarifying. That is what I was doing as well. Strange thing though, some of my friends did update, setup iMessage, and it didn't show blue for me. At least until they sent me a message.

yeah, I think there is some issue with having it properly sync up the various contact points (email, phone number, etc) for some users.

Frankly, it's been a day...ONE DAY...since IOS 5 came out. I think it says a lot more about us obsessive types that had to jump on this immediately than those who actually have perspective enough to not have to rush out to update right away.
