So this morning i decided to do some music stuff on Mac Pro 5,1 quad 2.8ghz running Mojave. Booted up fine as usual but then had issues with wireless trac pad and wired keyboard.

Every time i tried to select something using trac pad it acted as if i did a right click. Then when trying to eject cd using eject on keyboard it asked if i was sure i wanted to shut down. So did reboot and same thing was happening.

On one of the reboots when attempting to enter my password i could only get 4 letters of password in. Plugged in extra keyboard i had laying around and was able to enter. After trying mac keyboard again i noticed that after 4 letters if i waited 2 or 3 seconds i could enter rest of password.

So im hoping that maybe i need to just replace cmos battery as i havent replaced it yet since i got this Mac Pro. Ive read weird things can happen if battery is failing. Any advice would be appreciated.

BR2032 battery when with lower than 2,9V makes the RTC counters stuck, this causes all sort of issues with your Mac Pro, check it before doing anything. After that, I'd start the diagnostic process testing your keyboard and trackpad with another Mac, just to be sure that you have a problem with your Mac Pro.

Thank you so much. Im going to try and get a BR2032 locally otherwise gotta order one. Keeping fingers crossed this is the issue. Thanks again for the quick response and giving me hope for an easy fix. Ill keep you updated.

You can use a CR2032 for a short time, no problem. A CR2032 will fail because of the GPU heat, but works until you wait for a real BR2032 to be delivered.

Remember to remove the mains power connection before starting and take care to not break the battery holder.

Update... Replaced Battery and thought all was good then same damn thing. So sat for a minute and realized I could try the keyboard out on my MacBook Air M1. In my defense I never thought it was the keyboard because I purchased it a little over a year ago from OWC and it looked brand new.

So plugged into MacBook and was a able to type for about 1 to 2 minutes and all of the sudden the brightness dropped a couple notches. I increased brightness to full then before I could type anything I watched it decrease to black screen. So I am VERY relieved it is not my Mac Pro but I feel so stupid I didn't think of trying it on another Mac before freaking out and posting.

I needed to replace battery anyway because it was the only thing I didn't do after all the upgrading.
I appreciate your time and apologize for my stupidity.

Thanks again tsialex. You helped me a lot on my Mac Pro 5,1 journey.
