Guys,

Now that I've released the long-promised "Universal" version of my iPhone 4/4S/5/5s / iPad3/4 video camera enhancer tool (see https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1538193/ ), as I had promised, I've been working on a HUGE article on "pimping" the video camera of the iPhone 3GS.

Under iOS4, if you don't mind the significantly lower (effectively 4...12) framerate, it's capable of a resolution of 1168*876. That's almost four times more pixels than the nominal, measly VGA (640*480) resolution of the stock 3GS and has even more pixels (1023168) than 720p HD video (921600)!

First, if you have 4.1 on your 3GS (you can easily downgrade to it as Apple still signs this very version on the 3G and 3GS), get my old 3GS camera tuner from my Cydia repo ( http://winmobiletech.com/cy ):

Then, set it to "Full" mode and, then, now that the necessary files are patched, overwrite /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Celestial.framework/N88/AVCapture.plist with the file now-released at https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/81986513/012014/14 vcam enh univ/41 1168 876/AVCapture.plist .

The latter file has somewhat larger resolution than that of my old tweak and, which is VERY important, has no "clicking" because I've fine-tuned the parameters to find the "sweet framerate spot" where the camera hardware still isn't overdriven, resulting in it restarting every minute or so. With the latter breakthru, the 3GS' camera has become a pretty tolerable for example conference camera where high video framerate isn't as important as high resolution. And my tweak does deliver on the latter.

I'll publish a full article on the 3GS video camera enhancement some time. However, as this is a major breakthrough, I wanted to share my findings and results as soon as possible.

I'll also release a version compatible with iOS 4.3.x later.

Unfortunately, iOS5/6 can not be supported - Apple has completely disabled the hackability of the camera, fully taking away all kinds of high-resolution recording.

I've released a 4.3.x-compatible version for the iPhone 3GS:

Excellent work.
And your write-ups are second to none.

You have a genuine passion for this type of stuff and it shows.

Thanks :)

BTW, here are the links to my iOS version-specific 3G S tweaks, covering all the possible iOS versions (except for pre-iOS4):

- iOS 4.0...4.2.x: https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/18658177/
- iOS 4.3.x: https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/18662073/
- iOS 5.x: https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/18663358/
- iOS 6.x: the Universal version (see https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/18640187/ ) has been updated to version 1.1 and now supports the 3GS under iOS6 as well
