I finally got home to finish it.

I finally upgraded to iPhone 6, 64GB. I picked it up at the Apple Store and they let me hang out for a while to do setup my new iPhone. First they had me to a wifi backup in the store, which was a great idea and how I normally backup. When I went to restore though I had two backups to choose from, an older "David's iPhone" and the current "David's iPhone (2)." I chose the latter and it had all my settings and apps where they should be, which I thought was awesome! The same goes for all my text messages.

But, it named my iPhone David's iPhone (2). And it stopped downloading the apps and photos. I thought maybe it needed power, so when I got home I plugged it into my MBP, which started a sync. And this removed a lot of app placeholders from the phone.

Honestly, this is the first time I think I've done an iCloud Restore and I was hoping it would be smooth, but I'm guessing it's not. I don't know if I want to just leave it where it is, Erase All Content and Settings then restore, or just erase and start as new.

when i picked up my iPhone 6 on launch day, i decided to set it up when i got home as i won't have any wifi interruption. restored it with my iPhone 5 back up and all went good. plugged it into a wall charger instead of my macbook.

maybe when you plugged it into your mac it auto sync or something which disrupted the iCloud restore. if you didn't do any further iCloud backup, start all over again and restore from the backup again.

Thanks. I redid it and all is well. I think the interruptions is what messed it up. The Apple guy said that wouldn't be a problem and I know they don't want people hanging around for a few hours but it was aggravating.

But I just noticed one of my screws at the bottom has either worked its way out or wasn't in all the way from the beginning. Hopefully I won't have to do another restore.

I had a similar experience with restoring from iCloud. Read somewhere it is not a full backup: just barebones. After thst, I only do full, local backups which are also backed up by my Time Machine. if you decide to use this method, recommend going into iTunes every so often and deleting the older backups. Keeping a 64G phone backups takes a bunch of hard disk space. Good luck !!

This is what I've always thought and what I've seen on previous backups. Normally I set up as new so I don't get the old junk on there, but when doing it in the store the other day, I noticed it put EVERYTHING back the way I had it. Games that I didn't think were backing up to iCloud were right where I left off. I didn't have to sign in to a couple of apps. And all my texts and iMessages were right where I left off. So far, I've had no issues with artifacts of iPhones gone bye.

I'm wondering if it might be that I have 20 GB of iCloud storage. Before it was only 5 GB and I was right at the limit.
