We'll never get the new Google Map's features will we?

Unless you've been living under a rock most of you will know Google has seriously enhanced their mapping application with the Motorola Droid. i.e. new map views, and of course the Turn by Turn Navigation with voice command support

I'm just wondering if these will ever make it into the iPhone especially given the tensions between Google & Apple right now. There was also talk of Apple buying their own mapping company a few months ago

Is it safe to assume we'll never get the new Google map features and in fact Apple might scrap Google's map application from the iPhone altogether in the next software/hardware iteration and instead choose to go with their own stuff instead?

What's your theory there? Apple will drop them for their own? It's possible, I suppose, but really hard to say. I could argue it either way, but my guess is that Apple is happy with Google and any contrary plans you've heard about is just Apple being prepared for the worst (as they often do).

So I consider it a low possibility that Apple will drop Google maps from the iPhone.

Or did you mean Google will stop supplying the maps to the iPhone? Or stop updating the iPhone's map? To both of those I say no, because Google likes making money and isn't a stupid company that would mess that up.
 
I wouldn't think we would see this update until the 4.0 software release in June, with the new Iphone, IF we see it at all.

I really just don't believe based on the what we have been reading of the relationship between Apple and Google at the moment that we we be seeing this update at all.

The more people that use Google's programs = The more money google makes.

So as I asked above, what's your theory there? Since Google likes making money I doubt they'd be the problem. So it must be Apple that'd be blocking an update? If so, why?

I'm not saying they're not, I'm just asking the 'why' question, which I don't have an answer for either.
 
I think the OP is reffering to the Google Voice debacle, but I think that's more to with the carriers not wanting it, than Apple(correct me if I'm wrong).
I don't think Google is looking to crush the iPhone, as they know they'll just have their one phone release, per year. Their main target is Win-mo, as they want to be the 'go-to' OS for all the other manufacturers.
If Google were looking to weaken the iPhone, they wouldn't have given it Street View and their voice search app, and kept it for their OS.

The theory is a combination of: The two companies not being as 'tight' as they were with the ejection of board members, google voice debacle etc, Google wanting to give Android a leg over iPhone however temporary, and of course Apple seeking to be independent of Google and its whims...they're that kind of company afterall

The process involving Apple is slightly different from the usual App Store submission process, because Maps is a built-in iPhone application, he said.

That would be because the navigation story is 4 days old. Should use an RSS reader so you can keep up with things better.
 
Either way, it just confirms to me, that Win-Mo is Google's primary target for world domination. Skynet is a comin' people, get those bunkers built!
 
If this is any good, which it's seems to be I feel sorry for the people that have bought the expensive TomTom application(s).

Well yes exactly - MMS for 2G anyone? Once we got round Apple artificially blocking it, they got the networks to block it as well, just to prove 100% that it doesn't work and that the 2G can't support it........ I'd expect exactly the same behaviour with GPS apps..... Why? Because they can and all they care about is getting hold of your money. :(
 
i could see them making google navigation for the new iphone and 3GS only and cutting off the 3G (like they did with the original iphone and mms). they would claim that the 3G doesnt have the processing power to "handle it", but it would just be to make people upgrade.

Yeah this will probably be the likely outcome.
 
There was another post last week about something similar to this and I said the same thing. Apple just bought a mapping company. I'd say that their ties with Google Maps are coming to an end.

Yup, unlike all those other altruistic companies that provide a service out f the goodness of their hearts.

Yeah, my point was that
1. We already bought the phone
2. We already pay for the cell service, including SMS/MMS
3. We know that the iPhone 2G can send and receive MMS, because we've used it

4. Apple and the carriers then artificially block us from using MMS to try and persuade us to throw away the 2G and buy a 3G or 3GS.

So no "goodness of their hearts" is actually involved here. Altruism is not needed, just fairness. My payment is the same whether it's a 2G or a 3G and the capabilities of the phone are the same (except the 2G doesn't have 3G service obviously!)

And therefore I was just saying they'll probably do the same with new mapping features.
 
Who knows, this might end up as an OS 4.0 feature. Then it becomes a win-win situation for both companies.

On the other hand, Apple's purchase of the google maps competitor certainly makes things interesting ...
