Well, still no "unified folder" to store documents

I mean, seriously, WTF Apple. I know they don't want it to become some folder hell, but there is no reason to store documents within an app and not let any other applications access that file for reading/editing.

I like the other feature of OS 4, but to not have something as rudimentary as this is full of fail.

In the keynote did SJ say that you can open documents you have emailed in specific apps. For example you could email yourself a Pages document and edit. Not exactly what you were after, but hey.

I think that's a feature now on the iPad that looks like it's being ported to the iPhone.

You can already do that. When you open a file it will give you a list of all apps you have loaded that have identified themselves as being able to handle that type of document. Problem is, that document is then tied to that app.

I though iWork.com would be a solution, but I found out that it doesn't update the document you downloaded, it just adds another copy to iWork.com when you share it. If there was a Google Docs app, that would basically take away any issue, since you could just let your docs reside on the "cloud" and then there would always just be the updated copy available.

I'm hoping this is coming. I'm really expecting the iPad to be a cloud device. I think once most things can be done online, the limited storage of the iPad will not be a big deal anymore...

He didn't demonstrate every single new feature. Just highlighted a few. He said over 100 new user features and 1500 new api's for developers.

As has been mentioned, this is a rather large one to have left out of the tentpoles, esp over things like 'iBooks on the iPhone!' Don't you think?

God I hope you're right!!!!! The simple act of passing a doc back and forth rather than creating multiple instances of it would sure come in handy

Yea there isnt much new coming to OS 4.0 it's all stuff thats been on android forever...except for the gaming thing which might be kind of cool for ipad but the rest is just playing catch up :/ Nothing really innovative other than the new iAd LOL

He was asked at the conference about flash also and flat out said no Flash won't be allowed on the device. Obviously because that would interfere with his advertising campaign that uses HTML5. I see myself likely switching to an Android tablet once they become available so I can have flash, a file system, sd cards, usb etc... It will be alot closer to an actual laptop than this iPad.

My only hangup will be the games, I like to play the games and Android doesn't usually get the same games that are on iphone until much later on down the road and that gaming social network thing might be pretty cool on the iPad.

When a user docked an iPad, this folder came up as an external drive to which documents and files could be dropped into, then Apps would have the ability to all access & save to this shared folder.

The perfect system was there!, and it didn't make it into the final product. Grr!!!

All I want is the ability to get a document from Dropbox, edit it in Pages, then save it back to Dropbox.

I have a feeling that we will get an announcement this summer of true wireless cloud syncing. Shouldn't Apple's new server farm be coming online before too long? I think that's the reason we haven't seen a good solution yet. Apple will make it all happen through the cloud. Save your files there, open them from anywhere. They stay in sync across all your devices so you always have the current version. No messing around with anything, stupid simple.

Gee, that sounds easy.

That just syncing a document with that single app. It's still not a common 'user directory' where you can have all your files and access them from any app. It's also ass clunky as hell.

Yes, each app has its shared folder, but that folder is inaccessible to other apps. At least, to 3rd party apps.

If I have a file in Dropbox, I can open it in Pages sure. But I have no way to sync it back to Dropbox without connecting my iPad to a computer and moving it. That is incredibly clunky.
