i was looking in the buyer's guide and i noticed that it wasn't there, i am planing on buying one in the near future but if a refresh is coming soon i am willing to wait as I have other priorities to buy before the apple tv since it is not that expensive and if the refresh is way to far away i can buy it now

are they that random?

no, but the old one was released in September 2007, the next update (other than drive size) was the current version in in september 2010, theres not enough to establish a cycle.

Probably nothing till september at the earliest, and maybe if apps come out, then apple will feel the need for a processor bump, of if they decide to bump it to 1080, otherwise it could stay the same.

i guess i am burning the 100 bucks then, i don't think i am going to feel bad about it if it refreshes in september (if it ever does refresh buy that time)and if it keeps the price range i will just buy it new whenever it releases :D

I wouldn't expect a hardware ATV update anytime soon. It's all software and streaming. They probably aren't going to go back to a hard drive (or even SSD) in the near future, so there's nothing to upgrade in the hardware. (Faster processor, I guess, but since it only streams, that's probably not needed.)

I don't think there will be one until 2012 at the earliest. I'd like to be wrong though.

I don't see much need for a new hardware model, but a software refresh would be great , bump it up to 1080p & add an app store!

Do you know how well the current hardware can handle 1080p? I'm assuming it would do fine, but I don't know.

The hardware can handle 1080p fine, but the output will downscale it to 720p. Try feeding 1080p content to the Apple TV: it plays, but in 720p.

Seriously? It just came out in September and you want a new version? Haha. IF Apple keeps updating the AppleTV.. I assume it will come out in September with their iPod conference.

Is the Apple TV worth it? I got my computer room and a monitor in my room (that's all the TV I have in my house), I was thinking on purchasing one to stream movies to my bedroom monitor, is it worth it? My internet connection won't be good enough for streaming from US servers on HD.

i think once the Apple TV gets more functionality with iOS 4.3, hopefully announced on Wednesday morning, that more people will get it. I'm still waiting for Hulu support, hopefully it comes in the refresh. All changes will come from software most likely...I dont see Apple doing a full hardware refresh until summer 2012 at the earliest, but it would be nice to have 1080 sooner than that :]

Hulu plus maybe..

Hulu doesn't want to be on apple tv, at least not for free. They would just pull a google tv then. I wouldn't pay for Hulu either, between my DVR and Netflix, they have nothing to offer. Especially since paying customers are subjected to advertisements anyway....

I think it's worth it for the HD streams and full catalog access. And getting Hulu+ on a jailbroken ATV2 works great. And the commercials don't show up that way, either. An unexpected surprise.

For me I have two ATV2's - one in the LR on a 42" plasma HD set and the other playing in the BR on a cheap monitor. I also have an Airport Express running speakers in the kitchen... all for content that resides on my iMac computer....

Will say that for streaming movies I found that the 1.5Mbps sucked with Netflix... of course that was my "free" option that is included in my condo fee... so I had to suck it up and pay Comca$t an extra $50 for 10Mbps service to get Netflix to play right... they said there was no other mid-range option.... :(

In response to the above OP post... My opinion is that as of right now ATV2 does not fit to a standard Apple upgrade cycle, so it is anyone's guess as to when the ATV3 will be released.

Given that Apple says they "sold" over one million ATV2's by Dec 21, 2010 - keep in mind that Apple considers units that are sold to resellers as "sold" - even if they still sit in their resellers inventory from what I have seen mentioned before - there does seem to be interest for this ATV vs the 1st generation.

Fantasy speculation warning here.

Given the success of Apple's iPhone and Mac App Stores; I see that an ATV iOS APP store being offered. In my crystal ball I see this September iOS 4.4 to better link iOS 4.3 devices to the ATV2 - including an ATV App Store. iOS 4.4 will allow for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad to be a keyboard and mouse for the iOS 4.4 update.

In order to gain new customers for the new ATV App Store, I see Apple offering what I call the ATV2+ - same basic unit with some memory options beyond the 8GB for local storage than the current ATV2 offers. With BlueTooth (BT) added for a new Apple BT keyboard/magic trackpad as one unit (of course with a "lap desk" pad for use on the couch).

Any ATV3 comming soon with A5 dual core and some more memory for apps?

I don't see how that would be called a ATV3. Since most of the apps will be for streaming services, I don't even see how the current ATV wouldn't have plenty of storage for apps. I really doubt there will be a refresh anytime soon unless they just release a minor revision to bump the specs a bit. Right now they have it priced at the perfect price point. They can't afford to add to the cost.
