I'm considering replacing the standard 1TB SATA HDD that comes with the 24" iMac (2009) with a Western Digital 2TB Caviar Green Power Hard Drive.

What I'd like to know is if the drive should work with the new iMac?

It would be good if :apple: offered the 2TB WDC drive option when ordering iMac's IMHO.

Why do you need the 2TB exactly? $300 for only double the capacity isn't a very good deal. I've looked at doing this same thing but I'm waiting for the price to drop.

You're right, just checked the pricing - too steep. So what model HDD's ship with 2009 iMac's? Still WDC - I hope.

I believe so, my 17" 2.0 c2d did, haven't checked my current 24 inch. If I remember I'll check later but it's only a 320gb.

EDIT: Just checked and my 24" iMac has a Seagate 320GB HDD in it.

Thanks for checking. It's not that I don't like Seagate, just that I have heard some horror stories about their 1TB drives and since the 24" 2009 iMac I want ships with a 1TB drive, I would prefer a WDC.

I hadn't heard anything bad about their 1TB HDDs, but it is hit or miss with the 1.5TB HDDs from Seagate, which is why I'm waiting for these WD 2TBs to drop in price.

The new iMacs use WD drives; the 1TB is a Caviar Black and the 640GB a Caviar Blue.

I just minutes ago pulled the 500gig drive out of my 24" imac and its a WDC 500AAKS drive. I replaced it with my exisisting seagate 1TB drive. I would love to go 2tb but seeing how easy the hd swap is in these after you get over the shock of it I'll just wait till they drop in price and I really NEED the space.

Every Mac I currently own or use (and including my old Mini I just sold) all shipped with Seagate drives, from 60GB to 160GB. Personally I prefer Seagate over WD, as I've had better luck with them. Not that WD is bad, though... :) Seagate and WD are the only brands I'd EVER consider.

EDIT: Though I've had really good luck with Seagate (and WD for that matter), I just finished reading a LOT of really bad reviews on Newegg for the 640GB and 750GB models. It seems that the larger you go, the worse reviews Seagate gets. I'm think of replacing the drive in my iMac, so I may just go with the 640GB WD Caviar Black ($69.99 with free shipping at Newegg).

Yeah, I hear that the 1TB drives in the new iMacs are Caviar Blacks, though I have not verified this personally. It's great news, as before I heard this I had considered buying an iMac with the smaller drive and manually replacing it with ... a 1TB Caviar Black, ha ha.

But why would you want to replace it with a 2TB 5400rpm drive? Have you forgotten what it's like to have 5400rpm on your boot drive? yuck

I bought a 500GB Time Capsule, and am going to replace the disk with a Caviar Green, but I haven't decided on the size. Probably 1.5TB, but really both 1TB and 2TB are still on the table.
