Are W500 Western Digital Caviar 500GB good hard drives with the Mac Pro? I'm looking at purchasing a Mac Pro with these hard drives already installed. Thanks

These drives are the ones that I purchased (WD5000KS) for about $173 each shipped from http://www.chiefvalue.com (Newegg.com) but the price has gone up now. I think Monarch has the best deal on them now. Basically they are the best performing and quitest/coolest drive of all the 500GB drives. Downside is that they only have a 3-year warranty. Considering all this I still purchased 4 and they are running great in my new Mac Pro in RAID 10.

There is a 500GB WD enterprise level drive that has a 5-year warranty that I saw at newegg.com for less than $200 shipped. If I remember right it is pretty quiet and cool but I can't remember.

I love the drives so far by the way, they really are quiet. I have been a Seagate fan forever, and still am I guess but their drives came in at the top of the noise/temp levels of the 500GB drives so that is why I went with the WDs.

I had bad luck with Western Digital in the past and swore "never again".

I received my Mac Pro last Friday and bought an additional WD 500gb drive, basically as it seems to be as quiet as they come. Certainly is the case so far, have it filled with 350gb of music, photos and video, it is definitely a tad quieter than the Barracuda (500gb) that came with the MP.

If it doesn't work for me, I suppose I have no one to blame but myself, but system is "go" at the present.

Oh yeah- it is a BLAST to install a drive with the MP. Even more fun than the G5 PM.

These hard drives are awesome. Really really quiet, fast and reliable. I've currently got 2 of them in my Mac Pro alongside a 150GB Western Digital Raptor and I just can't fault them.

Basically, to fault a drive, use this:

I went for the WD5000YS...same drive but enterprise class and has firmware designed for RAID use. Also has a 5 year warranty, 2 more than the OEM KS.

The YS is also like $20 more. Easy choice!
