Good afternoon. I was wanting to ask the community for some advice. I purchase a WD My Cloud Home drive so that I could access some files remotely. A 4TB drive was $199, (in case other solutions are recommended). Basically you have to go into safe mode on your computer and activate reduced security (allows management of the kernel extensions from identified developers and allows remote manageremnt of kernel extensions and auto software updates).

Is doing that safe?

Thanks in advance for the community help!

I have one and would not recommend doing that. I tried and it caused all kinds of issues. Looking at dumping the WD and going a different route. WD support for MAC's M1 stinks.

Thanks so much, so did you return the drive or find another solution? Really appreciate the reply.

I second this opinion. Note that if you do this, Apple Pay will be disabled on your Mac (and there are probably all sorts of other implications). I use the My Cloud Home purely for Time Machine backups now, for which it's not great but functional.

Thanks so much for the information and feedback. I use Apple Pay frequently so would not want to lose that access. Returning the drive now! Thanks again!

Hello jeme,

Here's my personal take on remote login to a personal home network.

Generally speaking, I wouldn't do it. Unless you are prepared to play the part of "IT support" with regards to security, you are leaving yourself open to potential attack from hackers and people of the baser sort. Why risk having your system compromised, data stolen/deleted, ransomware, etc.?!

BTW, wasn't there a big stink about the WD My Home Cloud drive being compromised and a ton of people lost all of their data, not too long ago!? Do a Google search on it.

Good luck on your decision.
