What 3TB hard drive to get

I need more hard drive space, and I was wondering which 3TB hard drive I should buy.

Buying an external drive and ripping the drive out is probably the cheapest way to buy a HD at the moment.

I've resuscitated about 6 x 500GB drives to store some of my stuff.

Due to flooding in Thailand, resellers have capitalized on the situation by price gouging.

Yeah, but they're likely using slower Green drives. The last few external WD drives I've taken apart have shown that this is the case. Often, they'll put the cheapest drives possible in.

But I do see where you're all getting at because that's even cheaper than what a bare Caviar Green sells for right now. The only caveat would be that you're probably voiding the warranty by ripping the drive out of its enclosure.

There is some truth and lies in this...

Floods in Thailand did occur; however, resellers are not price gouging you. The factories in Thailand did suffer considerable damage to sensitive equipment. According to Digitimes, (don't have the article link, but I'm sure Google can provide) one of Western Digital' factories could take up to 2 years to recover.

Also, consider almost 80% of the world's Hard drives were made in Thailand. All these leads to Supply and Demand. Low (and lowering) supply... prices will increase as a natural cause.
 
I was only offering good links to anyone needing 3TB of space right now... 5400 or 7200 rpm, internal or external aside. I needed 3TB in any format to save 2.66TB of video files this week, and ended up buying a Seagate 3TB Expansion drive for $189. Of course, it's now even CHEAPER (grr!) only a few days later! Link:

Oh, man. The one I bought on Newegg is only USB 2.0, and the link I gave for $30 less is USB 3.0, too. I got hosed. Too bad I already used it. Guess it doesn't matter, since I don't have a USB 3.0 card right now anyway. Don't you hate when you shop for something you just bought, and find a better deal? Hahaha
