What 6 core CPU to buy

Hi guy i have mac pro 2009 quad core 2.66 single core. Looking to upgrade to 6 core. i did bit o research and before i pull the trigger can you tell me which one to get and if they will work. I mean hey all have same spec 6 core 3.33 one is 3.46 what is the difference here?

I also see 12 cores intel Intel Xeon E5 2670 V3can they it in to my mac?

Just pick the cheapest one between X5690, W3690, X5680, W3680 (if same price, follow the above sequence).

If you need 64GB RAM, then only consider X5690 and X5680.

The 3.33 CPU is about 23% faster in most operation (single thread limiting). And about 90% faster in multi core operation. I am not sure if your 3D work can utilise all cores. If yes, then the difference is huge. But at least the 3.33 CPU can still gives you a 20% improvement. (if you are CPU limiting)

You dont need de-lid CPU for single-processor machine

You can use W3670, W3680 and W3690 with a single CPU daughter board. I'd go for the W3680 or W3690 if you can get them for cheap, since they have a 6.4 QPI speed rather than the W3670's 4.8. RAM will also only run at 1066Mhz, whereas with the other two it can run at 1333Mhz, RAM permitting.

In that case, buy a whole used dual processor 4,1 usually is cheaper than just upgrade the CPU tray + CPU.

I had the same 2.66GHz Quad, and upgraded to the X5680 (3.33GHz 6-core). I actually bought a W3680 (3.33GHz 6-core - but can only be used in single CPU systems) but decided the X5680 was better for two reasons:
1. It mean that if I ever found a dual CPU tray I only needed to buy another X5680 and I could go 12-core (you can't use two W3680's in a dual CPU tray).
2. The X5680 allows for more ram options (something to do with triple channel maximums - sorry you'll have to Google to find out more).

A third reason was the price difference between a X5680 and X5690 for a miserly 5% increase in CPU speed. If money isn't a problems, the X5690 is your better option.

Anyways, I don't regret upgrading to the X5680. The cMP runs perfectly. I'd love a 12-core (just waiting to find a reasonable dual CPU tray), but I've got enough power to do all the things I want to do + more.

There is guy in my area selling mac pro 4.1 2009 but dual cpu Dual 2.26Ghz Quad Core (8 cores total)or 600 Canadian can i take a cpu tray from this machine and replace my single cpu tray

Yes although I think it will change your electronic serial number of both computers, so then they won't match the serial number on your stickers at the back of the cases.

If you are an "A" type personality, that might bother you (it would bother me). So instead of swapping trays you could just swap drives.
