I'm quite disappointed with what Apple has come up with for LLMs. There are apps like BoltAI that clearly outperform Apple's Intelligence in general productivity. This really doesn't meet my expectations at all. What's your take?

I think they'll improve it over the next few years, but in the meantime Apple had to put out something to satisfy all their shareholders who kept texting Tim with "hey bro, you gonna add AI to your product like everyone else or what???" 😬

I understand that, but how did one developer manage to create something better in BoltAI compared to a big company like Apple with their Apple Intelligence? :D

Apple's also trying to do it on-device which I much prefer over sending stuff to some random server somewhere. That comes with trade offs. AI apps are dumb anyway I'm not sure why everybody cares so much. The only one that's useful is ChatGPT and I'm even having to correct it constantly with little facts\details it gets incorrect.

What irritates me is that every phone that isn't a 15 Pro or above gets stuck with the Siri that can only sometimes turn my homekit lights on. The ChatGPT siri should at least be offered to all the iOS 18 supported devices IMO.

What's most worrying is that Apple seem to be pinning their hopes on selling more iPhones, and other devices to a lesser extent, because of their ability to run Apple Intelligence. I currently have an iPhone 12 Pro and considered replacing it with a 16 this year. I've decided to wait until next year. But....the reason I'm replacing it with a newer model is not AI, its for better battery life and long-term OS support. If I had a 14 or 15, there's no way I'd be upgrading anytime soon, based on what we've seen and what we expect in the near future. And that's Apple's biggest problem right now.

I use some models, like Qwen 2.5 32b, on my Mac with Llama.cpp and access them through the BoltAI app. Everything runs locally, which is great for keeping things private. If you're looking for an alternative to Apple Intelligence that also stays on your device, this setup might be good for you, provided your Mac has enough resources.

I have iPhone 14 and I won't be replacing it for at least 2-3 years I think.
