What about iMovie 3

from one of my friends (who has a close source from apple...atleast he says so) says that it may come out mwsf....but we'll just have to wait n see wha happens at mwsf, he did say something bout new laptops or something (i forget what he said but i think he just said about a dvd rom model ibook being brought in) im not 100% accurate (since i heard bout this a month ago) but we'll just have to wait n see...
iMovie is my favorite iApp, but it seems that this is the one that has receieved the least amount of updates and attention. C'mon Apple! This is the program that sparked the digital hub and you're just letting it rot? Let's see something that will make Premiere cry!

the ibooks have had dvd-roms for over a year, but back to the topic of iMovie... i've heard rumors of an imovie3 update for months, but nothing ever seems to materialize. there will surely be an update, but i really hope that we get one with a lot of new features and get it soon. that being said, apple really does not want to step on adobe's toes with imovie (they've really given audion and karelia the shaft with itunes and sherlock) but adobe is the one company that has kept the mac platform afloat with its professional grade software and first rate mac support. apple can easily live without microsoft, but not without adobe.
I'd really like to see a few real-time elements thrown into iMovie, as well as an ability for better implementation of 3rd-party plug-ins.
Apple already stepped on Adobe's toes, broke their kneecaps, beat them over the head w/a bat, and threw them down a long flight of stairs onto a landing of broken glass, barbed wire, and razor blades with Final Cut Pro.
iMovie is a consumer app that is way below Premiere. iMovie is probably the best consumer video editing app, but it's still just a consumer video editing app. Unfortunetly the Mac platform doesn't have a whole lot of middle ground when it comes to video editing (iMovie, Premiere, FCP, and Avid is it). While there are dozens of editing apps for the PC in a variety of price ranges.
But the iMovie + iDVD combo is still the best editing/DVD authoring software tandum out there (w/the exception of FCP and DVD Studio Pro).

I love Final Cut Pro, but it would be a real shame to see Adobe disappear. Not that they will, a strong protion of their sales come form the Mac platform. I just hope that Apple doesn't do something stupid like stupid like release Photo Studio Pro or something Photoshop-like.Don't bite the hand that feeds you...

I love Adobe but at the same time it's getting really hard to hold them up on there pedestal anymore. There support for Mac has gone down hill in the last 3 years and I fell Final Cut Pro as more as a filler in a place that Adobe has chosen not to keep up to speed on.
I agree. Apple didn't make FCP to compete w/Premiere it made FCP to be much better than Premiere and compete w/Avid. Premiere is definetly a "prosumer" tool where FCP is an emerging profesional tool.

Adobe will be just fine, there really are not alot of options for a PC editor if you want to try and compete with FCP in quality and price. Adobe will still sell many many apps to PC users since they do not have a FCP-like ap competing with them, their mac shares are not that big. (sure avid could be considered as a competitor but not in the same price category)

But it works so different from other non-linear editors that it is not a good stepping stone. FCP, avid, Premeire etc. work in very different ways, when one moves up, they have to almost start from scratch.
I would like to see a more "professional" interface. a second video track. multiple audio tracks (not just overlays). Also a way of clipping that is not destructive to the original capture. Titles that sit ontop not imbeded in the track.

Maybe iMovie3 could have a both an "easy" and an "advanced" mode where the "easy" would keep the same style interface, and the "advanced" would open things up abit.
Apple can't make iMovie too advanced because they would be ignoring their demographic. i-apps are meant to be used by people who don't know how to edit video, pictures, or make DVDs (just like you said). They aren't meant to be anything more than entry level proggies. Which is wonderful, IMO, because there aren't any programs (for Mac or PC) that are as easier to use, and as good, as iMovie.
I agree that iMovie works very different from other NLEs, but from a new user, non-editor point of view it probably has the most intuitive<sp?> GUI and workflow (which was Apple's goal).
If you have "mastered" iMovie, and you want more from your video editing experience then you need to move on to a more advanced program (Premiere or FCP). Unfortunetly, like I said before, there just aren't many video editing apps for the Mac so users are either stuck using iMovie (which may be too "small") or moving to Premiere or FCP (which are probably too "big"). Unlike on the PC side of things where their are probably a half dozen editing programs targeted to your average home users alone.
