What about the next iMac Update?

I would love to buy a new iMac around turn of the year... but I do not know wheter this point in time is very clever or not.

Current iMac was introduced August 7th this year. Recording to the previous update intervals I would bet for a next update early 2008 (Feb-Mar = 7-8month)? Am I right?

What is realistic? Simple HDD and/or CPU upgrade? QuadCore? What do you think?


Do we have to wait another 12 month until (Aug 2007-2008) next update?
 
Chances are that it will be a simple speed bump, perhaps increased graphics.

Nothing major.
 
Since they just introduced the aluminum iMacs in August, like xUKHCx I doubt you'll see anything but minor increase in speed, HDD size etc. for awhile. So, I'd recommend that you buy when you need it.

That's the point... it would be a nice to have but not sine qua non for life.

I would love to see a 2.4 GHz QuadCore iMac... or a 2.8 GHz C2D 20'', maybe a 3.0 GHz C2D at least.
 
I'd love to see a 30" iMac with a Quad Core, some external expansion slot like an ExpressCard34 slot, and up to 8GB ram.

I'm not thinking unrealistically that seems quite possible for Apple to do, but I doubt they will.
 
first of all i would like to see a less reflective screen. The glare will destroy many people's eye sight just like CRT in CAD offices.Second iMac quadcore
 
Apple will hopefully have fixed all the screen and freeze bugs for the next iMac upgrade. Who knows they might even use different screen panels and a different graphics card. They might offer a matt screen option. They could up the ram to a minimum of 2GB. They could up the processor speed, but let's be honest the present machines are fast enough for most iMac users and most likely will be for the next couple of years.

As for the glossy screen I was a little concerned, but I have to say, personally I love it, but that's just me.
 
Since Apple switched to Intel processors, their release cycle became more predictable. Mind you I said more predictable, not predictable. That being said, you won't see another iMac update until Penryn laptop CPUs are available in quantity. You'll know when that happens because the PC vendors will release new laptops en masse. The big upside to Penryn is that it will produce less heat at the same speed. Additionally, there are new instructions which supposedly speed up video / graphics work. We'll see though.

I personally believe there is a 50/50 chance Apple will wait until the Montevina chipset is available before releasing a Rev B Al iMac. The big upside to Montevina is a faster bus. There are other additions of course, but I don't think they'll make it to the iMac. Montevina is planned to be released in May 08. To me, there are two options. One is to release new iMacs without Montevina (but with Penryn) in January. The other option is to wait for Montevina which makes it more like May-June.

A few things I'd like to see, but no one knows for sure which, if any, will happen are a new GPU, eSATA, and HDMI in.

Just wondering, why does everybody want this? What's the point of forcing people to buy an iMac with at least 2 GB of RAM? Not everybody needs that much, and if they do they can just configure it with more or buy it third party and save some money. I don't understand why I see people bashing Apple for letting customers choose to have less than 2 GB.

As long as they use the 1 GB chips in the single slot I'm all for 1 GB total. Save a whole lot of money on RAM.

I'm hoping there will be revisions to the iMac AND the Macbook Pro; I don't care what apple do as long as all of the current issues with the iMac have been ironed out and I can go out and buy one without the fear of the big freeze. Here's hoping! :p

Hi, I'm not saying that "everybody needs this" I would just see releasing the next upgraded iMac as a natural progression, especially with the continued drop in Ram prices and increase in power.

There's NOTHING in my original post that bashes Apple for their current ram release.

I can also see Apple adding a hdmi connection at some point in the near future.

I can also see Apple trying to become even more environmently friendly by making their new machines more power efficient, using more environmently friendly materials and reducing the current heat output of their machines.

Did you read my post? It's fine if you want 2 GB of RAM, but not every other person in the world does. If they do, again, just configure it like that or buy some third party RAM and save money. But there is no reason at all for Apple to require people pay for at least 2 GB of RAM. I still don't understand how anybody could think that is a good idea, the only thing it does is limit people's options, and it wouldn't benefit you in any way.
 
Next revision will only have speed bumps and possibly a different GFX card that has the same power as the current model. The speed bumps are a definite. The low end will still be 2.4 GHz while the 20" will be either 2.4 or 2.8 and the 24" will have 2.8. The next update may come around March or later of next year. I say buy now if you can buy it now.

If you wish to wait another 8 or more months then that's okay too. They might release some new updates to Leopard, iWork and iLife that will come with the new machine.

This is all contingent on Intel and other hardware manufacturers. Apple has to keep prices down, and until the hardware makers can reduce their prices by producing their products more efficiently and being more "Green" themselves, Apple and other PC makers will be using the dirty stuff.
