Because of the ongoing failure of the Apple icloud email, I want to use an alternative to me.com email, and would appreciate suggestions.

I have used earthlink, and this does work, but I have had a lot of spam there; they only allow 500 entries in the junkmail listing, and these were used up within weeks of starting. And it is clumsy to use their webmail interface because they do not allow the usual Apple method of dragging to select items.

I use gmail now, and have not had any problems so far.

But are there better choices? Is there a good site to see the choices discussed?

I personally believe you are using the best email in the form of GMail. I have been using them since the day they offered the service and can only count a single time that I had issues. GMail has always been my default service and will continue to be for the future.

I do use iCloud but think that it lacks features that GMail provides. Also, with this outage going on over 24 hours now for me, I need something I can trust.

I agree. With my further and further integration in all things Google, gmail is looking like a good alternative. Always have another backup, however. I use MS Live now but its fairly subpar, IMO.

Microsoft's new Outlook.com is quite nice and clean.

Outlook.com has been superb and rock solid, with full push capability on my iPhone. I've dumped my GMail for Outlook, and I love their new clean interface.

Another vote for outlook/hotmail. It's been maligned in the past, but it's really very sold. I would still far prefer to have iCloud work flawlessly (with threaded messaging included on web interface), so if they get iCloud working like that, I'll use it exclusively.

Another one here. I'm in the process of de-Googling my life and have gone exclusively to Outlook as my secondary email account (@me.com is still primary, no problems here). It's fast, it's clean, it seems to be dependable, and the @outlook.com domain is still very new... so you have a good chance of nailing down your preferred email address if you want it. The integration with SkyDrive is really pretty slick, too.
