I'm looking at getting a new Mac Mini (let's ignore the whole wait/buy now debate) and am trying to figure out which of my peripherals for my 2006 Mac Mini will still work with the new model.

Does anyone know if there will be any problems with using the following hardware rather than the newest equivalents?

- Wired Apple keyboard from 2008
- Apple remote that came with my current 2006 Mac Mini
- A new ASUS HDMI monitor (i.e. do I have to use the Apple HDMI to HDMI adaptor?)

Also, does anyone know if there are driver problems dual booting Windows XP? (I'd rather not invest in Windows 7 or 8 when XP works for my needs.)

Thanks!

1. Yes that'll work for sure on any computer.

2. It is quite possible that it will work, yeah.

3. As far as I know the Mac Mini takes standard HDMI, so that should be fine.

:)

I researched this problem myself when I was looking to use an older version of Windows to play my classic games. What I unfortunately discovered is that, as of OSX Lion, Boot Camp no longer supports Windows XP or Vista. The only way you could run it is in a virtual machine on top of OS X.

Q. "What Apple Peripherals Are Necessary?"

A. None of them, really. Use whatever you want. It's a matter of personal taste and requirements.

I haven't used an Apple mouse since they gave up ADB. Can't type on the paper-thin "flat" Apple keyboards, either….

LOL @ Windows XP... seriously your not going to install that on your Mac are you?

Thanks for the help everyone! I'm just trying to figure out where I can save some money in my purchase.

Of course I'm not using it as my primary OS. I just have a few games that I like to play that I have for Windows. Why bother getting a newer Windows when XP can play the games that I have?

Of course, if Boot Camp no longer supports XP, I suppose I'll have to get Windows 7 anyway. Sigh...

I would have installed XP under bootcamp as well except for not being compatible with Lion/Mountain Lion.

If you're only using it for games - who cares?

I installed Windows 7 under boot camp and XP is a virtual machine under Parallels. For older, less graphic intensive games, I use the virtual machine. For more graphic intensive games, I boot into Windows.

Windows XP absolutely sucks I wouldn't load that garbage on anything. Who cares I do, but it not me it's you and him. Use what you want but I would quit playing games before I loaded that on any of my Mac s. To each their own.

I have a XBox if I want to play games. It's 100% compatible and always works.

What did Windows XP do to you? You seem to have some strong feelings about the issue.

There are a lot of older PC games that you simply can't play on a console. And the Mac versions of those games don't exist/are no longer supported (PPC)/or simply suck due to crappy ports. For me that game would be SimCity 4.

Indeed. Also XP is less of a resource hog than Vista/7. As stated above it's perfectly possible to run XP-era games through Parallels/VM's without having to reboot into Bootcamp. That's what I do for certain classics and EMU's.
