So, is it just me, or is it weird that Sonoma (and past OSs) doesn't offer 'Photos' as a alternative app to open a pic on a right click > Open with...? Say, when someone has sent you a pic or downloaded it from elsewhere. You have to go to Other and manually scroll to Photos.
Third Party apps are likely to show up in alternate app list, but not the baked-in Photos?

Yes, I 'get' that Preview is capable of doing a lot of what Photos does - and that is the Default - but still, why hide the app meant to manipulate the file in question?

Sometimes you wonder what they are doing in the donut.

Yeah, it's weird. I don't remember how it was before, but I think it's probably an oversight that might get fixed with an update. Until then, it's trivial to open pictures in Photos. You can Share from Finder, drag files into the Photos window, drag files onto the Photos dock icon, or Import from the File menu.

Oh yeah, I know there's all sorts of ways / steps you can do to get a pic into Photos (and, in my case, it's only to do some additional photo editing that Preview can't do. I don't keep any pic in the Photos' Albums), but you list several options a simple right-click (to an already populated list) should do.

I suspect it's because Photos would import the pic, rather than just view it, and that would annoy folk who don't want that behaviour. I suspect there would be a lot of folk who don't notice what's going on, and then start asking: Why is Photos taking up 200Gb of space. I don't use Photos except to view pics.

That said, instead of Open with…, it wouldn't hurt to have Import into Photos.
