They're the equivalent to the blue screen of death. In the event of a kernal panic you have to hold down the power button and restart.
 
not really, unless theres a persistant problem with your mac. I've only had one this year.

i think i may have had 2 all off this year, so if you are having them frequently then yes it can be serious.
 
oh thats it! I thought it was more serious! Are they common?

My first MBP (core duo) had one when I first opened it and turned it on; Plus it was a matte screen in a glossy box; not a good combo. So back it went, and next week the C2Ds were released.

My current MBP has never had a kernel panic (bought Dec '06) and my Mac Pro hasn't either (March '07). I don't think they're very common, at least how I'm using my Macs.
 
its something when happens to your Mac you get a weird feeling in your stomach and go crazy and call 911..i mean apple care for help! XD
