As a newbie, I am having trouble fully understanding what Boxee is and the benefits of using it over the ATV interface. I have looked at the threads here (mostly invitation requests) and been to the Boxee website, but I can't really find a simple explanation of what it is and why its desirable. Any help would be appreciated.

1) Its a way to organize your video/entertainment collection so that you can view it on a tv and not on a small computer screen
2) You can watch most video that is viewable on a laptop (from the internet) on a large tv screen...

I mainly use it for Revision3 shows, sometimes Hulu. The quality of some of the channels isn't great..but that has been a common complaint.

The Benefits of Boxee over just the ATV inteface:

1. Content. Boxee allows you to watch Hulu (fox/nbc shows), CBS, MTV Videos, WB, CNN and others...all for free, streaming to your TV. The ATV alone does not do this.

2. Media Type. Boxee allows you to watch all your home media on the ATV in almost any format. The ATV alone requires, for instance, that video content be in itunes mp4 format only. This requires you to convert all of your media in order to be able to watch it on the ATV.

I personally, still like the ATV interface the best and I have converted all my media in order it use it for all my home media. I use boxee mostly only for the streaming of TV shows. The mix of ATV, Boxee and QAM/OTA HD makes for a pretty good, and inexpensive way to watch all your tv without paying a cent to the cable companies. I big plus in my book.

Thx for the explanations. This is helpful. Is Boxee likely to charge for their software once it comes out of Beta? if so, does anyone have any idea how much?

According to the CURRENT Boxee business plan, it will remain free to the user. Business plans, of course, can change really fast when the best laid plans...
