what are the different wifi modes in the control center?

Hi all, as android user I'm used to swtich off wifi as long as I leave my home because I dont want any battery drain from radios I'm not using. On android I just tap on the wifi shorcut and that's it but on my new iphone with iOS 12 the wifi symbol turns white which I dont know what it means. Also I see wifi radio is still active on settings.
So it seems there are 3 modes:
Blue - Wifi active and working
White- ???
Grey - Wifi disabled

Any help from iOS gurus...

It's a disconnect, not a true disabling.

While Wi-Fi is disabled, auto-join for any nearby Wi-Fi networks is also disabled until:

• You turn on Wi-Fi in Control Center.
• You connect to a Wi-Fi network in Settings > Wi-Fi.
• You walk or drive to a new location.
• It's 5 AM local time.
• You restart your device.

To truly disable the wifi radio, need to go into Settings and toggle the switch. Or create a Shortcut that toggles the wifi on/off.

As above, you can only enable and 'disconnect' wifi from the control center. Turning it off requires going into settings.

Yes, it's miserable that Apple can't be bothered to either give the option of behavior or allow both via 'force touch', but that's Apple for you.

In fact, I think it's to their advantage that your wifi module is left on all the time.

I just dont get it!! what's the point of this pseudo-disconnect??

What does it mean until 5AM local time?? any sense?
You walk or drive to a new location?? uhh? so if i go to work it will automatically enable wifi??

You shouldn’t have to turn off WiFi or Bluetooth for people who also do that. I leave mine on at all times. And turning it off breaks some functions such as hand off and continuity. Also helps with finding your location.

Well I don't use either. And I'm sure not many people use it on daily basis. Being able to disconnect all radios it's a basic function.

I agree that turning on wifi from the control center is an extremely basic function that should be preset. The majority of people who own iPhones don't use handoff, continuity, and GPS works just fine with wifi off regardless of the annoying pop up that Apple likes to give you. They could easily give a force touch option to turn wifi off. This being said I'm sure Apple has their reasons for making this difficult so I just force touch the settings icon to turn wifi on and off.

I agree, whereas those are cool features I dont they are usefull at all in real life, they sound good on paper but that's all.
GPS and carrier network is more than enough to get a precise location, wifi is more like a marketing thing so you get ads from shops around for instance.

Unless you also disable WiFi scanning for location, don't expect Android to actually turn off WiFi. It might not try to connect, but it still listen. Battery wise, I am not sure, it is a bad thing, if the alternative is to fire up GPS.

Wifi scanning is disabled.

yeah this is one of those odd pieces of pretty awful design Apple's been putting out lately (see also: MacBook Pros that turn on when any key or the trackpad is pressed, even if fully shut down).

I’m sure Apple gets more support questions of people asking why their watch isn’t connecting or said feature isn’t working then they do people wanting this changed back.

You might be right. I'm sure there's some iPhone user out there that can't figure out why his phone isn't connecting to wifi after he turned it off. That same guy is probably trying to figure out why his new iPhone shut down after a day when the charger is still in the box LOL

Maybe I’m in the minority here, but I’ve found the control center function to be useful. For example, if I go somewhere like Starbucks or Panera where I’ve previously connected to WiFi but don’t want to this time, I can toggle the switch in control center without needing to remember to flip it back on when I get home. It “just works” for me.

I'm one of those people who never turns any of their radios off.

I don't find that having them on drains my battery any more or less.

I do know that I don't have to bother with figuring out why something isn't working or why my speeds are in the toilet even though I have fast internet at home.

I'm also one of those people who doesn't force close all apps in the app switcher and just lets things be.

Basically I don't worry about what my phone is or isn't doing because it just works for me.
