I'm on the verge of purchasing MobileMe. I really like the calendar, mail, iDisk and Photo management features.

But i'm concerned that sooner or later Apple will announce the service is going free.

Would Apple be likely to refund paid users, or give them some sort of bonus if the service were to become free?

Also, what are the chances the service will be made free?

Thanks

I think it's something they're toying with. It would give them a huge boost over android devices if every iphone came with iDisk and over the air syncing included...

I think they might be testing to see what the uptake is on find my iphone...

They have the new servers so they would be able to handle the increase?! ;)

As regards getting a refund I doubt it. I reckon they would include it with a new iPhone so you would get an renewal / purchase code with a new phone.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

Thanks for your opinions.

I'll get the 60 day trial, that should see the release of iOS 4.3, and possibly see some more news regarding MobileMe, after find my iPhone being made 'free' in iOS 4.2

It will take loooong time until MobileMe will be free of charge.

And even longer until the transfers back and forth to iDisk will be at decent speed.

And if you think about it, why would you want it to be a free service? They seemingly devote very few resources to the service now at $100 a pop.

Imagine how little they would improve and maintain it if they took the $$ out of the picture.

I could see a lite version of MobileMe existing in the new future since things are obviously becoming much more focused in the cloud. Give some of the features of MobileMe (at a very limited capacity).

i.e.
Limited syncing
  • 20 contacts only for Address Book
  • 1 GB of iDisk storage
  • Maybe Safari bookmarks
  • Some elements of other syncing options (dock items, keychains, etc.)

If I saw these services working flawlessly across all of my Apple devices that might hook me into paying if I wasn't already. :p

maybe they'd give you a free email address and some email capability. if they really want to compete with google i suppose that would make sense yes?

The speed of iDisk - along with its dumbass low-end functionality - is an insult to MobileMe customers. Wish it would be more like Dropbox as long as people have to pay to get MobileMe.

Last time I checked it was still warm in Hell. :D

Apparently it's only this slow outside of the US.... We Europeans get a bit of a raw deal there...
