i read several messages here on the forum where people are complaining that the new mbp with m4 doesn't have wifi 7. i can't imagine why this would be a problem in real everyday use. do you already have an internet connection that fast (mine reaches 300mbit/s) that it matters or what are your reasons? (future proofing, moving data to other hosts inside you wlan,..). i ask out of ignorance.

On one of the recent articles, someone commented that he needed Wi-Fi 7 for such demanding use cases as... streaming via AirPlay to Apple TV. Which probably seemed like a great argument to him, except streaming 4K video requires about 25 to 30 Mbps... and those speeds were achievable twenty years ago on Wi-Fi 3.

And that's one example of a larger problem: 99% of the people here would barely even use a fraction of the power of older Wi-Fi standards, and the vast majority of the people who are convinced that they need Wi-Fi 7 genuinely have no clue what they're talking about. 🤷‍♂️

I don't think for the average user in 2024 wifi 7 is a game changer. Wifi 6 is capable of 9,600 Mbps, streaming 4k is about 25 Mbps. So if you're worry about inability to stream, that's likely not an issue. Unless you live in a house where you have maybe 4 or 5 people who are playing online games, while also streaming several instances of 4K streaming and have a lot of connected devices, such as smart home appliances, security, etc. I am already often running 2 lines of streaming 4K in my house with some connected devices and don't seem to run into issues. It might help to some degree in signal cluttered areas like an apartment complex where there are many networks with many connected devices, and maybe it's more power efficient.

So wifi 6 most likely isn't holding you back even if you use a lot of connected devices at once. It's not just for using the Internet! If you do any LAN data transfer that you have to wait for (i.e. for me, it would be backups & shuffling large video files around), faster is always better.

I have 2GB symmetrical fiber and a Wifi-7 Ubiquiti setup. My wifi 7 devices can do about 1600 up and down real world usage a room or two away. The same distance but Wi-Fi 6E sit around 1000.

It does help with very large file downloads and uploads, but its also not a deal breaker when I roam around my house and fall back to Wifi6 and the speed halves for real world usage.

I have fiber optic using 6 in my house. Uploads and downloads of gigabytes take just a few seconds. I can’t see it for anything a normal person does. Now if you are uploading 100 gb and you have 10 GB ethernet----maybe.
