What are these specks?

I was checking to see if my sensor needed to be cleaned off on my Rebel XS, so I did the test of taking a picture of a white background with the smallest aperture. There are two little curved specks on the top of the frame, along with a bunch of what seems to be dust. The test picture is attached. I tried using a bulb blower to get them off, but they didn't come off.

it just needs cleaning, take it to a professional, or blow harder and longer until they're gone
 
In Oklahoma, the estimate was about $70 for a professional to clean the sensor. Instead, we got a recommended blower (Giotto's Q-Ball blower,) followed instructions we read ahead of time and it thankfully worked like a charm. Our spec of dust looked similar to yours except ours was v-shaped.

We would have been too nervous to go further than blowing the sensor but I'm sure others have done that successfully.

I will try the blower again tomorrow, it's owned by my school. I might just have to blow harder. I got quoted $75 from the camera shop in my town, but there's a photography trade show this Sunday about 5 miles from my house and they have $25 sensor cleanings.
 
The professional cleaning will be the only thing that will really do the job. It will clean your camera better than just a blower. They take it apart.

Put it back together, too...;)

Cleaning the sensor yourself is tedious but not difficult with the proper equipment: Sensor swabs, lighted magnifier and bulb blower (purchase as a kit for about $60.00). If you buy the kit from a good camera shop, ask them to show you how to use it properly.

I change lenses frequently and have a D600 so this was my best option.

If your having regular issues with your D600 can't you contact Nikon about getting it replaced. I read on dpreview that some people had there's exchanged for a new 610. One of the guys from work had his shutter replaced (with the one from the D610 so it is virtually the same camera.

Thanks AFB. I can't say that oil spots have continued to be a problem. I've never had it in to Nikon for service either. At this point, it's really just the usual stuff that gets in as a result of lens changes in a less than perfectly clean environment.
