What are these symbols and how do I get rid of them?

This might be a very stupid question, but I've had my iPhone 3GS since launch weekend and this just happened the other day. Those symbols near phone, mail and iPod have shown up and I can't get rid of them. Sometimes iPod goes away, but the other two never do.

Any ideas on how to get rid of them? They bug me.

I don't think I've ever actually used that app! I will look into it. Thanks.

Yep backrounder it is. You can go into the app and check the settings to disable the badge. I actually changed my badge to the apple beachball just so I know what's running and it goes with my Apple HD Theme

This may be a stupid question but how did you get the different looking icons? I saw on another thread how someone had different colored texting bubbles and thought that was pretty neat also!!
