So I have been playing Quake 4 for a while (full) after the demo of Doom 3, I'll tell you, Quake 4 is sooo much better.

I am currently in the Recomposition Center, going back to the tech guy.

I have noticed throughout the levels, from the beginning of the game, I have been picking up these "clips", I never bothered wondering what they do...UNTIL NOW!!!:confused:

What the eff do those clips do????

Ammo.

Different weapons have different ammo. I forget which weapon uses the term "clips"--maybe the machine gun? But you can pick up any kind of ammo regardless of what you are wielding--unless you already have the max of that ammo type.

I avoid picking ammo packs up if I've only used a few bullets, because that wastes the pickup. But if I've used enough to really need a new clip, I'll run back and get it. I treat health the same way.

I'm further along in Q4 than you, but I'm taking a break to play Quake Wars :)

I do think Q4 is better than Doom. But Doom 3 did have real atmosphere--once you got past the ENDLESS beginning which was just walking around offices! (What a thing to demo!)

Look into Prey as well. Shorter than Q4, but if I still think it's my favorite of the three, and probably the best-looking of the 3 too. (Doom 3, Quake 4, Prey and Quake Wars all use basically the same Id engine. Quake Wars is my favorite, but it's a totally different kind of game--team cooperation rather than storytelling.)

My friend said it was for the Machine Gun. I have tried Doom 3 as I've said, I'm not really scared at all, but the problem is fear, for example I get to scared to get to the other end of a hallway not wanting to know what will happen, game is too dark too. I have also tried Prey. That game is pure S***, I think its terrible. I mean I didn't even want to continue on with the demo because of the story so far and how everything went. That game looks terrible....

To each his own :)

The wallwalking, spiritwalking, gravity switches etc. take Prey beyond the generic same-old-shooter pattern, and I liked that a lot. I also like the variety and visual realism of environments in Prey, with all the organic and alien constructions, as opposed to endless metal hallways. Doom 3 is very monotonous by comparison. Quake 4 is in the middle--at least it has metal hallways AND the occasional outdoor canyon :p

Story-wise... none of the three break much ground. And none of three have much of a demo to judge by.

I didn't get to finish the Doom 3 demo, I couldn't beat the first "bad/eviled" marine, and I gave up on it and took on Quake 4, I loved it so much, I decided to buy the game. The team roll in that game sets it apart from Doom 3 by far. And Quake has more variety. Like in the medical facility, the design is white tiles. And in some places, the doors are different. I am thinking about the Quake Wars territory one. How much different is it from Quake 4?

I'm going to redownload the Prey Demo and give it another shot, I have to admit, I really didn't go long before deleting it. And I wanna try Doom 3 again to compare it to Quake 4.

Here's my quick comparison of the 4 big Id-engine games out now for Mac:

Doom 3:
Really boring demo
Medium-length campaign
Almost no story
Very little variety of environments (all dark corridors)
Very little variety of combat (mostly things jumping out suddenly)
Almost no puzzles
Very difficult because things kill you with no possible warning until you re-play
Great scary atmosphere with cool demons
Very simple multiplayer, but some fun mods (like LMS co-op)

Quake 4:
Really brief demo (with no multiplayer)
Long campaign
Simple story
Nice variety of environments
Very good variety of combat (including vehicles)
Few puzzles
Difficult but in a less-frustrating way
Better lit, less atmospheric
More varied, fast-paced, Q3Arena-style multiplayer

Prey:
So-so demo
Short campaign (the biggest criticism)
A little more complex story (but pretty campy)
Great variety of environments, with wallwalking etc. (not just empty gimmicks) and some jawdropping effects in certain scenes
Very good variety of combat (only one vehicle but it's fun)
Great puzzles (but too few of them)
Easier than the other two (when you win you can unlock a tougher mode)
Interesting alien atmosphere--walls really feel alive
Multiplayer is a nice change, with wallwalking etc., but few players online

Quake Wars:
No demo yet
Best replay value--endless new tactics to experiment with
Very little story--you can play the campaign in any order, offline or online
Some variety of environments (12 very large maps, containing multiple areas of combat each)
Endless variety of combat (you can be Strogg or Human)
No puzzles, but some hidden strategic places to find
As easy or as hard as you want (online is tough--at first--but play as Medic and you'll do your team some good)
Very realistic feel, like you are fighting in real-world locations that weren't made up for a game
Multiplayer is what it's all about--although single-player bot allies/enemies are very good too

The first 3 are first-person linear "quests"--you progress from scene to scene with no choice in the matter until you reach the end.

If you like linear "quests" then I think Quake 4 and Prey are the best. I prefer Prey, but Quake 4 is a close second and I know why people say it's the best one. Doom offers scariness, which is fun, but not much else.

Quake Wars is an entirely different kind of game, focused on working together as a team, with each player choosing a specialty (healing, spying, bombing from above, etc.). You can play in endless different ways, adapting to what your enemy and teammates are doing. Each battlefield has one side defending, the other attacking, and different objectives to complete. QW is a prequel to Quake 4--it's about Strogg attacking Earth, rather than humans attacking Stroggos. See:http://4newbies.planetwolfenstein.gamespy.com/ETQW/

All have excellent graphics. In the end, I'm not sorry I bought any of them.

Hmm, now I'm stuck with the fatty at the putrification center, when I press the computer at the other end, nothing happens!

I don't remember how, but you can get rid of the Stroyent Processing Creature (and not by fighting I don't think). There are some walkthroughs online.

Yea I have went through alot of walkthrough's, this being my favorite.

Actually I messed with my settings and I couldn't shoot, I got it now.

I'm at the waste processing facility, this level is actually fun, construction zone was too, I'm not sure, but isn't this level the longest in the game? I know the ending is tough, you face Voss.

Quake 4 was a lot of fun. The highest difficulty level is really, really, REALLY hard though. I don't think it's possible to complete it without using fast saves a lot lol.

That's one of the things I liked about halo - making it to the next checkpoint REALLY means something when you're playing legendary. There is no quicksaving, even in the computer version.

I agree: QuickSaving is a "bad habit" that takes some tension out of the game. I like Halo-style checkpoints better. You really feel like you've achieved something when you get to save, instead of being able to play every single room over and over without penalty like in Doom, Prey and Quake.
