What are your favorite apps?

Just got my new 16" MBP and I'm looking for some great apps. I haven't had a Mac in a few years, so I'm not sure what new stuff has come out.

I am a huge fan of Home Inventory but if you start be prepared, you have more stuff than you think! I started using this as a way to catalog items in case, god forbid, I ever need to place a large insurance claim but it has become handy in other ways such as paint color codes in each room, light fixture model numbers etc. Easy to use, stores pictures, receipts, manuals, also tracks warranty info and preventative maintenance.

PS - To the best of my knowledge your data stays on your machine, no BS offsite, subscription, china server crap.

Apps I use regularly: Firefox, Macs Fan Control (To see temp in the menu bar), MS Office, Parallels Desktop (The regular non subscription version), Soundflower (Menu bar icon to change HDMI volume), TeamSpeak 3

Apps installed but only occasionally used: DeskCover, DOSBox, Helium, OmniDiskSweeper, Stickies

• BetterSnapTool : organize your windows using the sides of the screen
• MenuMeters : monitor your mac (still working on macOS 10.15)
• Photos.app : so integrated, difficult to use something else
• Safari as browser, Firefox as backup
• Zacc : automatic expenses manager from PDFs (disclaimer: I'm the developer of this app! Still using it though ...)
• Whatsapp: much quicker to reply using your mac
• DevCleaner: if you use Xcode (developer tools)

I have no idea what you need, but here's my "Must have" list:

Zotero - Reference management
Scrivener - Writing program
Finereader - To make PDFs text searchable
Chrome - Internet surfing
Opera - Internet surfing/ lite VPN use
Fanny - To monitor CPU temperature
Microsoft Office - Yuck!
Nocturne - to quickly switch between day/night mode and monochrome mode
Virtualbox - To install older version of Linux/ Windows for specialized programs

How have you found the perpetual version of Parallels? I'm on the subscription license now but considering moving over to perpetual when it renews. Just curious how many years you think you can get out of the perpetual license before a Mac OS update breaks something?

I recently tried out and then subscribed to the annual plan for SetApp. I would recommend you try their trial. Or at least go through their listed software to find some great applications that you can buy or subscribe to separately.
