What blank DVD to use?

I have a Powerbook G4 with a 4X Superdrive. I believe I'm supposed to be using 4X DVD-R. Is it ok if I use 8X (or even higher) DVD-R discs? Or do I have to use 4?

What brand would be best? I've been using Ridata.
 
You could use discs rated at higher than 4x and they should be fine, but if you are paying more for them than 4x ones then why bother?

As for brands, Verbatim have always been the best for me. But many manufacturers use two or more different factories for production, and not all factories are created the same.

From the cdfreaks forum, which has a lot of very good info, the general consensus seems to be that Taiyo Yuden-produced discs are very good. The best of these have a code of TYG02, ie, Verbatim branded discs with a media code of TYG02.

I would like to piggy-back on this thread with a query of my own - Can I use DVD_RW? If I can, whats the best make? I notice the apple online store doesn't sell them.

I have a imac G5 with isight.

If you look at the tech specs at apple.com, you'll see that it says DVD-RW and DVD+RW.
 
I use Verbatim, they work very well with Mac. But if you have the money and want to spend your bucks on Apple certified DVDs: Link

I don't know anybody who would pay $35 for 25 DVDs.
 
I've always tried the cheapest brand I could find, at least once. And luckily That's Write disks, which was the cheapest I found, has always been good to me. I used to get 4x disks, when I borrowed an old external 4x burner. Only issue was that with Toast 6 I had to burn at half speed, but when I did that I didn't make any coasters. After upgrading to Toast 7, which has a setting for preventing buffer underruns, I could burn at full speed, also after I got a 8x external LaCie burner, and started getting 8x media (actually the webshop I use for media stopped selling 4x and now sells 8x at the same, or even lower, price... :)

Years ago when they were at 1x speeds, I used to buy the Apple certified DVD's but now I use TDK dvd's which work great, I would check them out, I know CircuitCity has a 25 pack on sale this week for $6.99 which isn't a bad price to see if they will work with your system, I have never had any issues with their disc's.

I understand that even though Imacs can write to DVD+RW the discs cant be written on again and again (i.e they get finalised).

Is this correct or is there a way around the problem?

I use DVD+RW in my iMac all the time (as well as my Powerbook), and I most certainly erase them. You just open up Disk Utility, click the disk, and then click erase. Perfect. I use disks up to 20 times, or more.
