What cable for Ethernet

Having a problem with my local area connection and ATV. Have my laptop connected via a straight through Ethernet cable to the ATV. I get the message that the cable is unplugged!
Do I need a crossover cable for this????

I normally don't use a cable as when I'm at home I use wireless. I'm on holidays and I took my ATV with me; however; been having this problem!!!

If it is going to work at all, then you would need a cross-over cable. I think it's pretty unlikely to work at all. Easiest travel solution would be an Airport Express...

I think you might have a better shot with creating an AdHoc wireless network (Click the AirPort icon and select "Create Network").

Are you trying to share your laptops Internet connection with the ATV?

I love when people jerry rig stuff. I've only used an ATV a few times. However, they really are meant to be hooked up to a Router, not another PC. You could try a cross-over, doubt it will work. The atv will probably want an IP address, subnet mask, and gateway. You probably could find someway to get all that to work but its just not worth it in my opinion. Just run video or hdmi cable to the tv and audio to the stereo or tv.

Post back if you get it working though, should be very interesting.

most recent macs are auto-sensing, and don't need crossovers, assuming the appleTV is also, as most things with ethernet ports that have come out are also.

chances are it's just missing the DHCP server, and need to manually assign addresses to both devices.

and ad-hoc wireless network should clear this up as previously mentioned.
