What can the Apple TV play?

Can it play music and movies in my library even if it wasn't bought in iTunes? It's not illegal before someone says it is

By itself, it can play any format that iTunes supports; regardless of whether or not it was bought there. If you install Plex or something on your computer, it can play anything via AirPlay from an IOS Plex app.

As long as the ATV is wired or you have N wireless, it works great.
