Hi all,

I am very new to all of this. Never done anything like it. I am attempting to upgrade the video card in my Mac Pro 2010 3.33 hexacore (El Captian) from an HD5870 to an RX580 (with ideally Mojave).

I just drove a total of five hours to pick up what was being sold as an AMD Radeon RX 580. When I got home, I realized that it’s not in fact an AMD RX580. It’s possibly an MSI RX580. Thing is I can’t find a similar card in Google searches.

Anyone know what this is?

Also… Does someone have a link to a page that has clear instructions on how to proceed? As in what OS can I upgrade to first with my own original card so that I can then move over to the new card so as to eventually make it to Mojave.

Thanks.

Andrew

Is the maker really that important? MSI cards are ok.

It's the RX580, that is all that matters.
Thanks for the response. As I said, I am REALLY new to this… Haven’t the slightest clue what is important. So I am good to go then!

My plan was to upgrade my OS to High Sierra with my present video card, then use the RX580 to upgrade to Mojave.

Seeing as I haven’t flashed this card, is there anything else that needs to be done? I already have the proper 6-pin to 8-pin power cable adapter. I have a high quality 8k DP cable.

RX580 has been natively supported since High Sierra. So it should work out of the box.

Maybe @tsialex can help, he is always there to help people with Mac Pros. But I think it should work just fine.

Thank you! I will go pick up a new internal hard drive, put High Sierra on it and see what happens.

Hey. A question that has been on my mind for the past few days… what does it mean to not have a boot menu? For someone like myself who never goes into the depth of my computer (I simply do music production), does it make a difference? When would it be used?

I realized that it’s not in fact an AMD RX580. It’s possibly an MSI RX580.
MSI is the manufacture of the graphic card.

AMD is the company which design the GPU inside.

TSMC is the company which manufacture the GPU.

And this card is make in China.

All these has no contradiction. MSI RX580 still has a AMD Polaris20 XT inside. No other GPU can be used to make RX580.

My plan was to upgrade my OS to High Sierra with my present video card, then use the RX580 to upgrade to Mojave.
This should work, as long as you use the original card upgrade to 10.13.6, then the RX580 will allow you to further update the firmware and upgrade to Mojave.

In general, that means you can't see the Apple logo until macOS load the GPU driver. Depends on your hardware config, that may means the 1st minute (or even longer) during boot, there will be nothing on the screen.

Also, you can't hold Option to boot to use the boot manager. But it seems you have no plan to use this function.

If you want to see the boot screen, or see the boot picker, you can do that by installing OpenCore, no need to flash the card. But that seems a bit beyond what you really need / want.

I hope, you mean Dual 6-pin to 8-pin as just one is not enough to power the card. It works, but under load you risk damaging the motherboard‘s power rails and the Mac will emergency shut-off.

It‘s mainly important when you want to select an other system (boot drive) than your main one to boot from. Normally, by keeping the „Option“ key pressed after powering the Mac on, you see a list of available boot systems installed or connected to your Mac. This is missing on normal PC-versions of the RX 580.
It should not be a problem in your case, even less so, as with “Open Core“, an alternate/additional bootloader, you can get back this functionality.
Almost everyone here uses it with their Mac Pros as “Open Core“ also lets you install newer systems than Mojave.

edit: too late

Ahhh… oops. No. I didn’t get the dual 6-pin. I had two people in the store say that it’s a low enough power card that I will only need the single 6-pin. This shall be corrected immediately! Thank you.

Would this work if I take off the +2 from the 6+2?

No, it must explicitly say Dual Mini 6-pin; sth like this one:

Thank you! I will go pick up a new internal hard drive, put High Sierra on it and see what happens.
Before purchasing a new hard drive, keep an SSD in mind instead of a regular spinner.

Worry not… I shall never return to spinners! The only spinners I have in my life are this one as well as a Thorens TD125 that is in the shop and my Hammond B3/Leslie 124.

Hi there,

I moved to High Sierra no problem. But in Mojave (which is what I need), the Display Port doesn’t work. Might this be a similar issue as quoted below from the stickie concerning the upgrade:

“Usually most AMD Radeon RX 560 models available on the western market works with MP5,1 and Mojave, but not the RX 560 made for the Chinese market since this card have less CUs and a different PCIeID than the real ones and Mojave don't know how to configure it correctly.”

I find it odd that when I Google my card I don’t find any that look exactly like it… similar but not exact.

Necessary is the device-id.

You could also dump the bios of the card and attach (GPU-Z).
When I get to the computer I shall do both. That second idea sounds like my kind of thorough… I shall learn how to do so and shall do so.

A few questions before I move forward (to give you as sense of where I’m at):

- What does “dump the bios” mean? I assume you mean the vbios. Does it imply simply copying it so that you folks can read it or does it actually mean removing it?

- Secondly, can this be done on my Mac or do I need a PC seeing as it is non-Mac card? I don’t have a PC.

- Lastly, can it be the only card in the computer at the time or do I need to use my initial GPU to run my monitor while doing this?

Don't make it too complicated, just do what Nermal suggest is good enough at this stage.
Go to About This Mac/System Report and post the output of the Graphics/Displays section.

My profound apologies to all that were helping. I hadn't set up the power supply correctly. With the proper dual 6-pin to 8-pin properly set up, all is smooth sailing via the Display Port... FOR NOW!!!
