In a couple of weeks we are expecting a visitor from France who will be staying with us for four weeks. What carrier should he chose, if he wants to be online with the phone he brings and make calls, especially back to France? For the calls home, he should maybe use a third-party calling plan.

Find a travel roaming plan from a carrier that offers eSIM. Install a VoIP-compatible app like WhatsApp, Google Meet, or Google Voice. Use iMessage and FaceTime when their iPhone connects to the internet.

If their French phone plan allows international calls, check if it’s permitted to call American phone numbers. In the US, T-Mobile offers unlimited international calls and texts for all Magenta and Go5g subscribers, up to over 70 countries around the world. but their iPhone would need to be roaming to access these features.

I have always had good luck with US Mobile. Very good prices, easy to set up/cancel, and with esim, everything can be setup yourself in seconds.

First check that his current plan doesn’t include international data though.

As for international phone calls, don’t do that. Use FaceTime or Microsoft Teams or literally any messaging service that allows you to call people over the internet rather than using a telephone number.
