while safari was updating, the computer hanged
after a few hours it was still hanged so I restarted it

now, when I turn the computer on I get a bunch of white screens BEFORE the log in
after a few mins, the log in screen shows up
and when you log in, it goes back to white screens

*please note, I have already re-installed mac OSX yosemite but these white screens still show up!
they are not blank screens, they show internet safari, mail program, they all open up and are white

can bad memory or a failing hard drive cause something like this? or what other hardware to suspect?
edit: tested memory in another computer and it passed tests
