What device are you planning to retire next?

Kind of bored and been pondering up coming devices and wondering which is going to the drawer to be retired next and thought I could make a discussion topic since many of us here frequently cycle through devices (no, really!? 😜 )

First on the retirement block for me is:

Nexus 6 (was keeping for it's headphone jack and I could make it louder. I've came up with a hackney work around solution for my other devices to make them a little louder)

OnePlus 6 (never really got into this thing)

I think both of these have been retired for a bit, just haven't tossed them in the drawer yet.

Next my main line, Galaxy S7 edge, been holding off because I'm thinking of porting my number to a new carrier or even fi just deciding on what. If I go fi that limits what phone I get.

Yup. Never really got into this device either. Was an unnecessary purchase that lately I've been playing ring around the root with and finally conceded defeat and left it unrooted which makes me even less interested in using it or picking up another pixel.

What has me in a holding pattern is nothing seems interesting any more.

I only have one phone, so I’ll be upgrading my iPhone 8+ to a 11 Pro Max when I can afford to do so.

I’m tempted to get the Note 10+ or the Pixel 4, but as a student, I’m not sure if I can rely on an Android as my sole phone.

Most likely is my Pixel 3XL but that depends on whether I find the Pixel 4 compelling. I like the OnePlus 7T but not going to throw my money towards OnePlus or any other major Chinese OEM for the moment.

I also have too many Google Home devices all over the house that rarely get used—I finally shut off my Google Play Music subscription, will likely be subbing to Apple Music and my podcast player of choice doesn’t have casting support on iOS so ultimately I’m probably going to get a few AirPlay speakers to replace them. Wish Apple had a slightly smaller HomePod for around $150-200.

I already traded my AT&T iPhone 8 Plus in for a new one on Verizon for my dad. So that’s finally gone.

My sister-in-law still has my 6s Plus, given in like new condition when I downsized to an SE. We bought her a brand new Xr, cases and display protector, too. I’ve heard nothing but complaints about both phones. There’s nothing wrong with the phones. How do I put this nicely? User error.

That tells you all you need to know about why none of my phones will ever be loaned or given out to extended family again. It will be trade in deals or donations to women’s shelter from now on

The 2 iPhone SE’s we owned, one of which was my daily driver for a year, have been loaned all over the place and I’m told they don’t work anymore, but they were appreciated by the kids. I think the SE’s just need to be wiped and started fresh. Though one was dropped a few times by a very clumsy 12 year old, so it may actually be broken. They will be kept as backups when I get them back.

My iPhone XR was sent in trade for a discount on my iPhone 11 Pro.

Snowball, my Pixel 2, hasn’t been updated or used in awhile. It’s a candidate for trade in for a Pixel 4 for my husband since he is keeping his Pixel 3XL for sentimental reasons and I am ready to let Snowball go now. If I don’t trade it in, it will be donated to the shelter. I’m not keeping usable phones in drawers anymore.

My Pixel 3 is still in rotation, used on WiFi and is my ebook reader. Might get traded for a Pixel 4. Might stay. I don’t know. It’s too new and useful to retire, that’s for sure. I do still use the camera.

Unlocked non updated S7 is the only Samsung I have left that can fit in VR headsets. I haven’t used VR in a long time. Battery on the S7 is crap now and it lags like hell so I might have to wipe it and start over to see if it can still work with VR. If not, it’s probably getting sent to be recycled. I don’t think it’s a good candidate for donation.

HTC 10 is definitely living the retired life these days. Buried in a drawer. The battery is not the best. It is good for music and probably still does phone calls the best of them all. But that’s about it. It’s a persnickety device so also not a good candidate for donation. It’s the only HTC I’ve ever had so it’s the one phone I guess I will keep as “an archival specimen”.

Note 10+ and my 11 Pro have sims in them and are my dual daily drivers.

My Nexus 7 (2013) has just about had it. Already replaced it with Samsung Galaxy Tab S2. Hoping that my Motorola Droid Force keeps up the good work. As you can see I am not a frequent buyer of new tech.

What do you mean by rely ?

OS apps preference aside

The Note being great for notes etc with a pen, fully functional file system that allows you to use as a flash drive for any file type and DEX are potential useful features for a student along with cross platform support on laptops and PC's in any local

Given you are on a 3 year cycle and the Note 10 is cheaper I don't quite see where your coming from with this comment

Just had to retire my iPhone 6s Plus, in an unfortunate occurrence due to hardware failure with the headphone jack, for my new iPhone 11 Pro Max.

Had that not happened, my answer would have been my 2011 MacBook Pro; as I'm considering a move to Windows 10 for my next laptop, rather than pay Apple's exorbitant prices for an overpriced, non-upgradeable appliance.

iPad got upgraded to 2018 over the past holidays, and my ATV4 is still going strong.

My Note 8. It's simply going to a new owner. I'm giving it to a co-worker tonight who is using an old Droid by Verizon phone.

It's served me well in the past two years and still has the original battery that lasts well over two days on one charge. It's from T-Mobile and is unlocked.

This is the second old phone that I've given to someone who I think deserves something nice and I think I'll continue doing that in the future to older phones. I have a Note 10, S10+ and an XS Max that I'm using today.

Next would be my Galaxy A8 2018. It’s been a trooper and the IP68 is awesome. If I can upgrade my iPhone 6s to the iPhone 11, the Galaxy will be retired since the iPhone 11 has IP68 as well.

iPad air 1 is probably going to get put out to pasture next. It still works but is finally too slow to be usable, and I have many other devices.

I wonder if I could find a way to make it a permanent photo frame?

Next year I am continuing the removal of apple products from my house. 2012 Mac mini will become a gaming PC.

Probably my Mi Mix 3. It's still awesome, but the lack of HD on streaming apps really puts the nail in the coffin for me.
And it doesn't help that I bought the phone in the six months I bought a OP7 Pro and Mate 20 Pro.

Still, though, Xiaomi has been supporting the hell out of this phone. And the slider mechanism is as excellent as ever. SD 845 is still great.

If I had no other phone... But I do.

Need to retire my iPhone 7 plus and Stainless steel 0. I'm strongly considering a switch to Android. I get this feeling every year but bottle it and stick with iOS but for 2020 I want to fully switch - phone and watch. Thinking the Note 10+ or S11 with Galaxy watch is my best option. Still not happy with £1000 price tags on any phone though.

Ha, I see my post saying my Pixel 2 was going to be retired. I ended up updating the software. My husband fixed something that was causing it to burn through battery. I have my second AT&T sim in it and use it for calls a lot.

Well I replaced the SE battery and have to a coworker because his partner still have a 5s.

Got some free cash, I figure I will upgrade my 2016 Pixel to the Pixel 3a XL. The Pixel camera is still way better than my iPhone 8 Plus. It will go to my niece over the sea, she’s still using the OnePlus One that’s 5 years old. That phone is amazing, takes great photos, I replaced the battery for it and it still run like new. The Pixel got new battery too, I will install Adguard to keep it more secure as Google probably stopped upgrading it.

I moved everything to Apple, but the Pixel will be mainly for backing up YouTube videos and as a portable offline media device + camera.

Between the 8 Plus and incoming Pixel 3a XL, honestly they will hold me until end of 2022. I will most likely upgrade before then, but it wouldn’t be out of necessity.

I have been using my old iPhone 4 as a remote control and a music player (the thing refuses to die!). However it can no longer sign in to iCloud after I enabled 2 factor authentication. It's time to let it go.

A 2012 Airport Express (that just feeds music to a 2006 Apple HiFi)

Admittedly, the AEX got a surprise software update last year making it AirPlay 2 compatible, but I want to replace multiple boxes and wires with a single wireless speaker. Keep it simple.

I’ll probably keep the old HiFi around (offline). I have a few working iPods that dock with it and it’s still a great speaker with an aux-in - which is becoming rare. That said, Apple Music streaming from a phone is so much easier.

Who knows, maybe the old iPods/speakers will come back in style - just like vinyl - and I’ll cash in?
